5.0 out of 5 stars fabuloushardcore, November 9, 2004
This review is from: No Wings to Speak of (Audio CD)
My brother saw Hopesfall perform one of their first shows back in 1999. He told me about how amazing they were, so I tracked down Frailty of Words and bought it online. I had all but stopped listening to hardcore before the first night I listened to the DTS release. Just like a lot of independent music, my first listen was a confused and almost disappointing one. But then I listened to it again. Now, nearly five years later, this is still my favorite cd of all time. I listen to all kinds of music too. I'm not a die hard metalcore/hardcore fan by any stretch of the imagination. These guys are blessed. Even though the original members have all gone their seperate ways for the most part, I still support and buy every album that this band comes out with.

Now, let me get to No Wings To Speak Of. Just as enjoyable as their first album, and slightly more progressive. If you want to here some outstanding music, buy this EP. Trust me, for fans of hardcore, this is cutting edge pure emotion spilled out over sound waves. It will change your perception forever. Everyone rants about End Of An Era. It's absolutely 100% as good as people say, but every song on here is equally impressive. This is the fullest sounding, most emotionally driven, heart pounding, deep and intense music I've heard maybe ever. If you don't buy this cd, you are cheating yourself big time.

If you like Hopesfall, I strongly recommend 7Angels 7Plagues, Misery Signals, Evergreen Terrace, Between The Buried and Me, Prayer For Cleansing. All these bands deliver much passionate hardcore, but you just can't compare them to Hopesfall. They are in a Leauge all their own. And just one more thing. What is it about North Carolina that so many of these awesome bands come from there? I dunno.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hopesfall, January 19, 2003

what can I say? These guys are phenominal! I expected nothing less. A Charlotte, NC based hardcore/emotional band screams and sings their way to be one of the best bands of their genre on the scene. Like all hardcore music, repeated listenings are a must because you don't catch everything that goes on in the songs on the first listen.

For fans of From Autumn to Ashes, Glassjaw, Atreyu, Beloved, Poison the Well, Avenged Sevenfold, Underoath, and Boy Sets Fire

Their newer album is most definitely worth checking out. Hardcore music is never gonna go mainstream but Hopesfall will become one of the major influences in the modern hardcore scene

Enjoy and rock on!

-Greg

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 isnt enough, February 21, 2003

This review is from: No Wings to Speak of (Audio CD)
ok track by track is how this review is going to go
in no particular order of course here we go
-endeavor- the band breaks this one down and delivers a technical masterpeice with slowdowns and mind jarring riffs the dual lyrics and screams are something you can only dream of.
-open hands to the wind- a solid track starting out with a barrage of lyricl chaos including screams and yells leading to yet another beautiful musical break down.
-april left with silence-ooo what a beautiful song soft subtle lyrics saying silence to lead it off and then boom they get straight to the point this song is a great emotional song i love it so much.
-from your hands-in my opinion the song most of us can relate to great emotionaly lyrics mixed with yet more well hopesfall great breakdowns and speed ups and he really flexes his voice with this song.
-far pavilions-one of my personal favorites of any band of all time the band is all on the same page on this whole album but this song seperates itself from everyone in this genre when you add lyrical genius to incredible musicianship you get wonders the drums leading up to a barrage of beauty set the tone for the album.
-end of an era-lackadasical in my oppinion but only to other bands standards this completes my review of quite possibly the best band when they were together also check out there other songs not on trustkill before the singer left

5.0 out of 5 stars the perfect ep, February 14, 2003

This ep, the axiously awaited follow up to their debut album "The Frailty of Words" established hopesfall as the most talented melodic hardcore band in the scene. Though this ep has only four songs, it is flawless. Never before has a band blended aggressive hardcore with incredibly melodic emotion this seamlessly. Out of my collection of hundreds of hardcore cd's, no wings to speak of stands out as a brilliant masterpiece. The lyrics are deep and full of imagry, the guitars full of emotion, and the composition is nothing short of perfect. It is an amazing album that I would recommend to anyone with an open mind. Unfortunately they have gone through several member changes and are no longer the same band. Their new effort isn't as impressive, though it is still good. It's rare that a hardcore album can bring tears with its emotion, but this ep has truly redefined melody in the hardcore scene.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing cd. Practically Perfect., June 22, 2004
This review is from: No Wings to Speak of (Audio CD)
This cd is almost too good for words. I would'nt ever want to compare it to The Satellite Years though, because they're both too good.

1.) Open Hands to the Wind - (10/10) A great, blasting way to start of a great cd. Good chord progression later in the song. Has a quiet interlude about halfway through, and then ends in a Hopesfall-esque emotionally-driving way that Hopesfall got their signature sound from. (Did that make sense?)

2.) April Left With Silence - (10/10) Wow, this track is amazing. I love all the guitar parts throughout the whole song. This song, if you ask me, is more of an experience than anything else. I don't have enough words for this song so I'll end it here.

3.) The End of an Era - (10/10) This is the long, almost epic song. I love this song to death, but it's probably my least favorite or second least favorite on this cd. It's just a bit long for my tastes. Keep it short and sweet. Great guitars, however.

4.) The Far Pavilions - (10/10) What an amazing song. This and April left with silence alone make this EP worth every penny of the purchase. It just has so much emotion jam-packed within a 5 minute song. The chords are amazing in the middle of the song, and the song smoothly leaves the listener with a calm, atmospheric guitar part. I love it when the drums pound lightly near the end. Bravo.

All in all...this EP is one of the most amazing EP's you'll ever find or discover. Buy this immediately.

(40/40) A+

5.0 out of 5 stars redefined what metalcore could be, October 22, 2008
By
This review is from: No Wings to Speak of (Audio CD)
Taking melodic cues from powerful predecessors Shai Hulud and Strongarm, Hopesfall gave us this humble four song follow up to their overlooked debut full-length. While most of the metal/hardcore bands - both Christian and secular - were busy trying to imitate Zao, these guys went a different route by adding melody, chordal drone, shoegazey reverb, and twin, clean guitar playfulness to their distorted crunch. See their espoused Hum-influence for further research. Their originality seen in this EP was perfectly matched by the spiritual fervor of their live shows, as anyone who saw them at Cornerstone 2000 festival can attest to.

Genre-jargon aside, the songs themselves - both the sound and the lyrics - just hit you in the way that a good, timeless metal/hardcore song can. I challenge anyone to listen to the last half "The End of an Era" without crying or fainting from heaven knows what.

Other bands have come dangerously close to the emotion on this CD (the late Taken and Life In Your Way come to mind), but if you're looking for the origins of modern melodic metalcore and why a lot of the genre's bands sound the way they do.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful......, June 16, 2005
This review is from: No Wings to Speak of (Audio CD)
this cd has to be one of my favorite cds ever.Hopesfall takes the rawness of hardcore and blends it so beautifully, its totally something new to the hardcore scene. The riffs are heavy but hav more of a light feeling to them instead of just going all out with the heavy riffs.the scrams added onto them make this ep and their First trustkill debut"the satellite years" areal treat to those looking for seomthing new to the genre." the end of an era" is heavy and harmonic.best track that i have ever heard.A+

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully done album, March 26, 2003

I have been into metalcore ever since converge came on the scene but before that i was strictly into hardcore and nothing else...Well i quess things have change because now im only purchasing albums that are either just too good or instant masterpieces such bands like "underoath" , "from autumn to ashes" ,"atreyu" ,,"skycamefalling", "converge","as i lay dying" , "killswitchengage" , "it dies today" , "blood has been shed" , "still breathing" , "nehemiah" , "unearth" , and, "between the buried and me" which all are great bands that i cherish very much. Now,Hopesfall is not exception because they blend everything from emo to metal and ofcourse hardcore which makes even more lovely and worth buying...After hearing this masterpiece i can't realy discrabe how good it is, maiby too good ?Well, in any case i'll say the best song here is "the end of an era" don't get me wrong the rest of the album is amazing but that's my fav song. Support these guys.

5.0 out of 5 stars This band will do great things., April 14, 2003

This review is from: No Wings to Speak of (Audio CD)
'No Wings To Speak Of' is the follow up to hopesfall's critically acclaimed debut Full Length 'The Frailty Of Words'. While 'The Frailty Of Words' was an exceptional record, 'No Wings To Speak Of' takes hopesfall a tremendous step forward. Building on what is now known as the trademark hopesfall sound, the band added a whole new dimension, a much more fierce or powerful approach. Even as this new record follows a more dynamic path of powerfulness, the band still keeps their exceptional melodies, melodies that would make any baby fall to sleep, showing a beauty that has never been heard in music before. hopesfall show an extreme brilliance at constructing songs, songs that can range from pure metal to sweet and beautiful emo-ish melodic parts. The one thing about hopesfall is that even though they play this almost generic style of metalcore, they themselves as a band will always stand out from the redundant bands that mix the singing and screaming style, because of their unique songwriting ability, their expertise in mixing the two styles flawlessly, while still remaining themselves. In the end when all of these bands fade away, and follow the new trend, hopesfall will still be here creating more amazing and beautiful records for us all to enjoy. 'No Wings To Speak Of' is a new starting point for hopesfall, that will take this band into stardom in no time.

I knew right away, that my previously favorite bands would drop in my interest. did. sure enough, I had to get this EP and "Satellite Years". and wasn't disappointed. "No Wings to Speak Of" is Hopesfall's unique style brought to perfection. when listening to it, you really feel like travelling through space. track "The End of an Era" is so beautiful, that you might literally think "this is what I'll hear when going to heaven..." a sound of sadness, yet peace in mind and soul.
beautiful.
