Editorial Reviews

The Cave Singers spend a good deal of time beyond the darkened edges of Seattle, in the mist and mystic, among the wolves and redwoods. And their songs, at least on record, have always been like beautiful, faded grayscale photos of this hinterland. Now, these photos are injected with hot blood and technicolor, a ferocity and bite we've yet to see from the band. No Witch is a new found sheen to the aura that made The Cave Singers' music so special to begin with.

There are some good songs, then there are some bad songs.

The lead singer has a unique voice that matches their style of music exceptionally well.

It really is kind of hard to fit this band in a 'genre' so to speak, they're just good.

The Cave Singers are what most people consider some sort of folk music. I would consider them psychedelic folk rock. They do have acoustic numbers, but they use various instruments including (per the booklet): Foot Jawn, Upright Bass, Alto Flute, Violin and Viola, and Keys & Bone. The lead singer has a unique voice that matches their style of music exceptionally well.

In regards to the album, No Witch is consistent to their previous releases in that it is a harmonious and enjoyable listen. Each song delivers a unique experience. I'm impressed they take such a open approach with their instrumentation and arrangements. I especially enjoy the opening song "Gifts and the Raft" along with "Outer Realms", "Haller Lake", and "Clever Creatures".

I've yet to come across a band that is similar to them, but perhaps Fleet Foxes may be close. Don't let the folk tag scare you, they're really on their own level. I highly recommend the Cave Singers for a purveyor of excellent music.

The Cave Singers are an aptly named band. Catch one of their live shows and they'll likely treat you to a primitive, tribal music experience that will have you (along with the rest of the crowd) dancing around the bonfire at the mouth of their cave while they attack their instruments like genius Neanderthals. Fortunately the band has captured some of this kind of live magic on tape for their third studio effort No Witch.

Guitarist Derek Fudesco casts a guitar-god spell on a number of tracks with his hypnotic open picking style. Singer Pete Quirk (who looks a lot like actor Michael Jeter in a trucker's cap and saggy jeans onstage) channels Mick Jagger as he sings, wails, howls, and talks with his appealingly fuzzy voice through cryptic lyrics. Drummer Marty Lund is the point that holds this power triangle together, galloping on solid beats down the center of each song while his band mates levitate like kites on either side of him.

This is one of those albums where repeated listens reveal that every track is worth your attention, but if I could only take a few songs away from this visit to The Cave Singer's cave they would probably be "Gifts and the Raft," "Swim Club," and "Haller Lake" - the latter of which features sing-speak lyrics, warm revolving guitar picking to drown in, and one of those Melodica things like Casey James played on American Idol last season.

I don't smoke pot, but if you do then you might want to save some for this album.

I can't believe there are only three other reviews of this album (as of this date). So now I feel compelled to help get the word out about this band. I never heard of them before I bought an Amazon download for $4. It's hard to stop listening. I love the lead singer's voice. And the music is so multi-layered with interesting instruments. I notice something different each time I listen. I like that; it keeps me from getting bored. I've gotten an earlier album now and am currently getting into that, as well. No Witch is highly recommended.

I really like The Cave Singers a lot, and while No Witch is very good, I'm slightly disappointed by it. I guess that's mostly because I enjoy the more mellow sound of their first two albums, and their several attempts at grittier rocking here come as an unpleasant surprise. It's not that I don't want the band to evolve, but in this case the change of sound just doesn't work for them, at least for my taste. So I wish they'd stuck to their original formula. That said, much of the album is excellent, but the inconsistency bugs me. I'm still a big fan of this great band, but No Witch isn't going to make it into heavy rotation with their first two albums, until I edit the few songs I don't like out of my playlist.

Original and unique and a pleasure to listen to. Not too sleepy but not too rowdy. I own a ton of music and it's always nice to find something -- like this -- that makes you take a fresh look at the way songs are created and presented. The Cave Singers are truly original.

The album does not flow very well. There are some good songs, then there are some bad songs. I've only listened to this CD a handful of times since purchasing it several months ago. But I can't get into it.

Sorry for the poor review.
