Book Description

"Marriage," said Bill Cosby, "is the one miracle the Vatican has yet to acknowledge."

NO WOMAN DIETS ALONE - THERE'S ALWAYS A MAN BEHIND HER EATING A DOUGHNUT is a hilarious collection of short essays about the misadventures of marriage in which author Kristen Houghton proves that staying married is indeed some sort of cosmic miracle. Nothing is off-limits as she tackles everything from:
* dieting: ("I live with a husband I call "The Thin Man" who is the same weight he was in college, believes food is something I should enjoy not avoid, and is firmly convinced that a hot fudge death-by-chocolate sundae at Ice Cream Charlie's solves all life's problems.")
* the battle of gender legalese: ("Said property to be owned by Alan Hopper and... Kristen, his wife? That's like saying ...and Lassie, his dog!" )
* surviving her husband's rotating ("I'm switching the handsets on the phones so they get equal wear, what's wrong with that?")
* following certain medical health advice: ("My doctor told me that not wearing panties was healthy for the vagina. Stop thinking with your libido; I'm trying to stay healthy here!")
* discovering your husband's great-grandmother's successful business was a" house of pleasure"
* why there is no "J" in the word vagina
* how true maleness is defined by pussycats
* dealing with a deaf marriage counselor
* the real relationship between sex and baseball
* how the word Spanx affects certain people
* the joy of incompetence
* how to plan a "simple" vacation, and much more.
There's even a fable about a totally mismatched ancient couple: a god named Getridofthese (he likes to "get rid of" household junk) who is married to the goddess Imightneedthis (Get rid of that? Oh, no, "I might need this", someday!)

NO WOMAN DIETS ALONE - THERE'S ALWAYS A MAN BEHIND HER EATING A DOUGHNUT has all the ingredients needed to help you along on the fearless adventure we call marriage. Laughter is both medicine and glue for couples - it can help to cure many relationship ills while holding it firmly together.

With relationship quotes from the famous, (Bill Cosby, Katharine Hepburn, Clint Eastwood, G.K. Chesterton and Oscar Wilde who all had their say about the marital state), to the unknown Victorian bride who wrote her cousin asking for prayers before embarking on "this fearless adventure" leading the way, the essays in this book are fresh and charmingly funny.

It is a book of pure delight from Huffington Post blogger and humorist Kristen Houghton and one that critics call "A brilliantly funny, irreverent romp through marital misadventures told completely tongue-in-cheek by one of the newest and best writers today. NO WOMAN DIETS ALONE - THERE'S ALWAYS A MAN BEHIND HER EATING A DOUGHNUT is a wonderful gem of a book. Houghton takes relationships to a whole new level of hilarity!"

Books by Kristen Houghton include the top-selling release "AND THEN I'LL BE HAPPY!" which is available on Kindle and in print versions. Her book of short horror tales, STOLEN PROPERTY, is being edited for a summer 2012 publication.

Besides blogging for the Huffington Post, Kristen Houghton's work appears in More Magazine, the San Francisco Examiner, TwoDayMag.com, Family, Bella, and other print and online magazines. She is the former head fiction writer and senior editor of Mused Literary Magazine.

I absolutely loved the title and was curious to see what was in store. I began reading  it and was soon laughing out loud, and nodding my head in agreement.  Fresh. Funny. Honest. Relatable.  Kristen Houghton's breezy conversational style of writing makes it easy to become absorbed in her world of men, women and the dynamics between us. Houghton finds the hilarity (and truth) embedded in the daily interactions between women and men. This is a book not to be missed!

From the Author

I love humor and I find that some of the everyday issues of married life seem to supply so much of it. We need to laugh together at some of the absurdities we face in the 'fearless adventure' of marriage.
Having lived through (and happily survived) these situations I became the humor story-teller for friends, colleagues, and at parties. Their laughter at my exaggerated stories of husbands and wives inspired me to write a completely tongue-in-cheek book of marital essays for my readers.

My first book, And Then I'll Be Happy!, a book on positive living and self-fulfillment, had humor liberally sprinkled in with advice. It became one of the 100 top-selling books of 2011. Humor is necessary to staying sane!

Marriage is a fearless life adventure and you're on this trip together! Enjoy it all and
remember: Humor makes this adventurous ride easier and smoother.

Read it alone, read it together, but read it and laugh. The great thing about laughter is that it is both medicine and glue for couples; it can cure many relationship ills while still holding it firmly together.

Enjoy!

If humor is healing, which some people have suggested, this book ought
to cure the entire population.

This is a total laugh-a-minute book. The titles of the stories alone
provide enough guffaws to make purchasing this book book worth it. My
favorite? "Panti-less in New York City." I also loved the comparison of
love to drug addiction and obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

While I was reading the book, my husband came in numerous times to
ask, "What's so funny?"

Loved the logic and legal escapes in "Let's Talk about Sex, Gender,
That is." Hurray for women's rights!

Here is a question I'd never considered until I read Kristen's book:
"Are women hot and what does that have to do with cuts of meat?"

Another favorite question was: Is it true women will willingly pay a
fortune rather than have the men in their lives perform any yard-work
themselves?

Some other favs: The dangers of planning a vacation, being
environmentally correct, having a perfect stranger tell you the
intimate details of their lives, rotator husbands, why women and men
speak different languages, and deaf marriage counselors.

The way Kristen introduced me to sex, murder, infidelity and
more...and it's all in the Bible...was priceless!

Other things I've never considered, but Kristen has, include: What sex
has to do with sports, why women have to multi-task in order to eat,
and when in-laws are outlaws.

Would also make a great gift!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of short stories February 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I first came across this book by reading an online article written by Kristen Houghton. I enjoyed the online article and decided to buy one of her books. Depending on the situation, I like reading short stories (or collections of stories). Some stories are better than others but I really enjoyed most. While you are reading the book, I guarantee that you will laugh aloud on more than one occasion.
