5.0 out of 5 stars OF THIS WORLD BUT OTHER, August 27, 2000

This review is from: Noah Creshevsky --- Who: Electroacoustic Music (Audio CD)
Some electronic composers seem to be seduced by the infinity of their new medium. Often their toots, plunks, and wheezes can remind me of a distant planet with indigestion. This is not the case with Noah Creshevsky. He is above all a composer. His materials are fragments taken from our traditional world of songs and acoustic instruments, deconstructed and recreated into a wholly contemporary sound. It is of this world but other. He uses brass fanfares, harpsichord, piano riffs, and voices, reduced to their essence and reshaped. His language is ours but outre; sometimes funny, sometimes energetic, sometimes poignant, sometimes strange, but always attractive. I really like this work. His craft seems virtuosic and seamless, with textures that remind me of a backgraound in a Renaissance painting. My favorite tracks are Fanfare, which uses baroque brass, Who, a voice piece in several sections, and Twice, a riff on 1950s piano serial music. He has a wide range. Well worth getting to know.
