There seems to be a very welcome rend today with the arrival of a plethora of tenors who not only sings well and show evidence of excellent coaching but who also have matinee idol good looks and intensely dramatic stage presence due in part o their acting skills. Such a tenor is Noah Stewart. Born in Harlem and receiving early training at The Harlem School of the Arts he began his early career at age 12 doing voice-overs then backup singing for such luminaries as Mariah Carey and Coolio until he developed a passion for opera. Leontyne Price is responsible for his being awarded a full scholarship to Juilliard School and form there his career in serious music took off. His awards flowed in - the San Francisco Opera Merola Award, an Adler Fellowship, and awards named for The Palm Beach Opera, Leontyne Price, George London, Licia Albanese, Opera Index Competitions, and just recently first place in The Mario Lanza Competition for Tenors. He now is in demand by opera companies and oratorio societies in this country and abroad. He is frequently sought for premiers by composers such as John Adams, Peter Ash, Judith Weir and others.

Noah Stewart's tenor range touches the baritonal edge, and this makes his true and focused wound have a rich burnished quality to it. We will have to wait until he produces recording of purely art songs and arias to fully evaluate his voice, but this recording is directed toward the general music audience - not unlike what British tenor Alfie Boe is doing.

I heard an excerpt of "Shennandoah" that he sang on NPR this morning, and I was moved to tears. I can't wait to be able to purchase the MP3 version of the album on July 3. I am sure it will not disappoint. I hope he lands some roles at the Met so I can see him in HD at my local movie theater!

I was fortunate to first hear Mr Stewart when he stood in at the last minute for Macduff in a terrible production of Macbeth in San Francisco a few years back. He totally stole the show. So I have been waiting for this first album. Noah has assembled a "sampler" CD of soulful songs which show his range, the deep rich color of his lower register and his sure footed soaring upper range. This is a man to watch.

I have been listening to this music all day. Being a music eclectic, the choice of songs is perfect for me. I love the combination of old gospel, the show tunes, the opera, and the folk music bound together with a resonating and controlled voice with great range. As an opera lover (but not snob who believes doing other types of music somehow denigrates talent), I found that his rendition of Tosca's aria had depth and beauty. I'd love to hear him perform Nessun Dorma.

His version of Shenandoah put a lump in my throat and I'm hooked; it was simply wonderful. I can't wait for his next CD. I have downloaded this mp3 on my iPhone, computer and Kindle.

There is something for everyone on this. I recommend it to music lovers with an open mind and an ear for talent.

BTW - someone get this guy to sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. He knows the lyrics (talkin' to you Aquilera) and he can sing ALL the notes like they are meant to be sung.

This is a kind of a crossover recording but with a terrible program: songs, anthems, gospels, one opera aria... each one unrelated to the next one, and, some of them of a very bad taste, like the first song, cara mia, with two italian words and the rest in english. Noah Stewart is introduced as an opera singer, but He only sang one aria in this program, and that aria is beyond his resources, at least at this moment. Noah Stewart has a nice voice, but it is not a finish product: He has a lot of work to do.

Lovely choice of songs and performed well. I became acquainted with this man when I heard him interviewed on Public Radio.

After hearing and seeing Noah in a production of Aida I just had to have this album. When I walked into the theatre and say the stage without any scenery which is elaborate in Aida and saw an orchestra on the stage I was so disapointed. However, when this man sang I was breathless and knew although no scenery this would be a fabulous production and it was only proving with excellent performers opera does not need scenery. I am just a collector of all types of music from bluegrass to opera and every thing in between and constantly seek exceptional cd's. This surely is one.
