Book Description

January 29, 2013

Will

Maybe I'm too late. Maybe Zoe's dad stole all her fifteen years and taught her to be scared. I'll undo it. Help her learn to be strong again, and brave. Not that I'm any kind of example, but we can learn together.

When the whole world is after you, sometimes it seems like you can't run fast enough.

Zoe

Maybe it'll take Will years to come to terms with being abandoned. Maybe it'll take forever. I'll stay with him no matter how long it takes to prove that people don't always leave, don't always give up on you.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Raw, immediate, and utterly unflinching. Halbrook’s debut features complex characters, and attempting to puzzle them out makes for a thought-provoking read.” (ALA Booklist )

“A dark, romantic wild ride reminiscent of Thelma and Louise.” (Publishers Weekly )

“How do we love and what are the consequences? Kristin Halbrook paints an edgy and vivid portrait of two troubled teens on the run. This is a gracefully written, thought-provoking and absorbing debut. . . . I haven’t read a love story quite like it before, honestly.” (Courtney Summers, author of Cracked Up to Be, Some Girls Are, and Fall for Anything )

“Beautiful, heartbreaking, and exhilarating—NOBODY BUT US will have you holding your breath until the very last page.” (Kody Keplinger, author of The DUFF and A Midsummer’s Nightmare )

“An achingly believable love story about two teens outrunning a society that has failed them, hoping the lights at the end of the highway aren’t just a mirage. Tense, lyrical and heartbreaking; the kind of book that lingers a long time.” (Kirsten Hubbard, author of Wanderlove and Like Mandarin )

I really wish I hadn't seen any reviews for Nobody But Us before reading because I feel like they were all just sitting in the back of my mind poking at the story while I was reading. Still, I did end up enjoying it.

I did not, in fact, really like either Will or Zoe, but I could appreciate their characters. They were supposed to make bad choices and be caught up in each other. I was so torn while reading because on the one hand, I know what new love feels like and that Zoe and Will's was multiplied by their terrible home lives taking it to an even more obsessive level, but on the other hand, I just wanted to take them both aside and slap some sense into them. It wasn't even just the spiral of terrible choices; I wanted them to see the poisons in their relationship as well.

The setting was perfect. I couldn't imagine a better way for this downward spiral of a relationship to play out. Usually when you think 'road trip' happy, carefree thoughts come to mind. That's definitely not what Nobody But Us was about, yet I still loved it. I think the excitement of being on the run really adds something important.

The Nutshell: Nobody But Us isn't my usual read because I usually stick to the fluffy stuff, but I'm glad I gave it a chance since I ended up really enjoying it. If you're looking for a quick read about two teens running away from everything while clinging to each other then you should read Nobody But Us.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Adventurous Roadtrip! March 12, 2013
Format:Paperback
To be honest, I've been sitting on my feelings about this book for a few days now and I still am not entirely sure how I feel. I really enjoyed it but at the same time, something is holding me back from loving it. I keep going back & forth between a three or a four star rating...so I'd stick with a 3.5 but we don't do half stars so...because of my indecision's, I'm going with a three star.

The characters, I loved them. Will, he was a bit rough around the edges but he truly loves Zoe with all of his being. He's got an angry side which comes out on many occasions but he hasn't exactly had a great childhood. Being abandoned by his mother at the age of two because she couldn't handle raising him, thought it'd be best she give him up to someone who could. Problem is, he never found that someone. Not really. He moved around from home to home until he ended up in North Dakota in a group home. He was released from the state's care when he turned 18. Up in this group home is when he met Zoe, who is a fifteen year old, broken girl. Witnessed her mother's death when she was little and living with an abusive, alcoholic father using makeup the best she can to cover up her bruises. Both damaged souls come together in perfectly.

The alternating chapters were awesome. Zoe is so innocent and I loved reading from her points of view but I really enjoyed Will's more. You could see how he knows his anger is an issue, how he doesn't want it to be but things just come out. It's like an internal struggle you get to see and I really like that because it's so real. As often as you see him drop everything to fight someone he never ever directs that anger at Zoe. He would never be like her father, someone who laid a hand on her in that way. That just shows the reader how much she really does mean to him.

They're young, they make a lot of wrong decisions but they're trying to reach the end which is the perfect future with the two of them. They see the picture but it's reaching the end point that is the biggest struggle. So many obstacles show up and it's just...rough. I really believe they should've stayed with Julie and maybe gone to see Misty, her daughter eventually. Two people who played such a positive role in Will's past back in Nevada. Back before things got really bad for him. They might be the only people, besides Zoe, who truly loved him.

The ending. Oh my gosh, that ending. I am still trying to fathom it. I just can't...and I can't even say anything about it because it would give away so much and then it would like 'what's the point in reading?' which is not what I want. But oh man...I can't even put in to words how rough this ending was is.

It's definitely different from what I normally stick to, the Fantasy/Paranormal stories but reading Contemporary is always a great vacation from the norm. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, which may surprise you because it's a three star rating but it's one that is a great read and the story sticks with you for some time. Which definitely makes it a great book but it's all about what the reader likes in how they'd come away from this story. Read it and see how you feel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Depressing, but I liked it February 10, 2013
By Jude
Format:Paperback
~4/5
[Also available on my blog.]

This was not what I expected. Partly in a good way, and partly not so good.

I wasn't quite sure what kind of relationship these two characters had what I started, although I'd heard some very not good things about it, so I was a bit wary, and went in a little bit prepared.

So, there's Will and Zoe, and they're in love, and they're on the run. The book starts immediately with them running away, Will picking her up and Zoe sneaking out her window. It gets right into the action, that's for sure. It doesn't take long to realize what's wrong with the two, what they're running from and why, either.

Will is in the foster system, and he just turned eighteen. He's had some very bad experiences with foster families, one that left him scarred and not for a reason you'd expect. And he's a little unstable.

Zoe has a very bad home life, and she wants to get away from it. So when Will decides that he's going to move away, now that he's eighteen and has a car, he asks Zoe, who is only fifteen, to go with him. And she loves him so much that she says yes.

So they're on the run. Will is more aware of what that means at first, and so is more paranoid. And they both end up making some very bad choices because they want the best for each other so badly that they would do anything to get it.

I wasn't expecting them to be easily in love and enjoying themselves all the time, but I also wasn't expecting their love to be as toxic as it is. I've read arguments about how this book isn't a love story. And I disagree with that. It is a love story. Only, it's a broken love story about a very toxic relationship. Because Zoe and Will are not good for each other, but they do love each other.

That's not to say that they wouldn't have been good for each other, had they had the opportunity to grow up first, grow into themselves and maybe get away from the people they're living with while away from each other, and once Will had gotten some help. But they didn't have any of that. And so it turned out very bad for them.

And it was bad. Will needs some serious help, particularly with his anger issues. And while some decisions became expected on his part, because you knew that he wasn't in his right mind a lot of the time, it made me grimace when Zoe decided to do the things she did. Some of them were just stupid and some were bad for a different reason.

I actually really enjoyed this book. It was sad and depressing. It was like watching a car crash or something similar. You knew, the entire time, that this wasn't going to turn out very well, but you didn't know how badly. Some people might have wanted to look away, but I didn't. I wanted to know what happened.

This isn't the type of story that some people want to read, given how depressing and crushing it can be, but that's exactly the type of story that other people do like. I am one of the people that do like it.

My only real bad point about this is that something about the characters didn't feel quite as rounded or believable as it could have. Maybe a little more work and it would have been better. But even saying that, I did like them and did feel some strong emotions for them. While it was obvious that Will needed some help, it was also very apparent that Zoe was only fifteen at points as well.

Oh, we also got glimpses of their friends and family, and I don't really feel like there was enough to form a good idea of who any of them. I just feel like the scenes with them could have been opened up a little bit more.

I did like the writing quite a bit. The story is told from alternating points of view, and each character had a very definite way of talking. Particularly Will, who doesn't have the best grammar. Even while some of the way he talked annoyed me, it did feel realistic for his character.

The ending was horrible, and I was hoping that it wasn't going to happen, but it did. And it's terribly sad and upsetting. Not only sad for Will, but sad for Zoe. I'm left wondering what's going to happen to her, how badly that is going to mess her up. (Not wondering in the way that this needs a sequel, 'cause I don't think it does. That ending ended things pretty well for me.) And that Will didn't really deserve it; he could have gotten help.

That's all I'm going to say on that; I don't want to give away any more.

So, some people will like it and some people won't. I did, and it's a pretty solid four stars from.

Sidenote: This has been compared to Bonnie and Clyde and If I Stay. I've never seen Bonnie and Clyde, but this does sound similar to what I have heard about it. Don't take my word for it, though. And I wouldn't compare this to If I Stay. I loved If I Stay, and this story is barely anything like it. Maybe, lightly, when it comes to the writing. But story-wise? Not really, no.
