"Nobody Else But Us ... Venn & Block ... Viictoria Records (2006)", July 16, 2011
This review is from: Nobody Else But Us (Audio CD)
Victoria Records presents "NOBODY ELSE BUT US", featuring David Venn (piano) and Rob Block (guitar), a duo recording showcasing the musical conversation and excellent musicianship between Venn and Block
They meet the challenge of being in sync meolically, harmonically, and rhythmically. Includes 2 solo numbers for a nice contrast. - "You and Me Against the World" (Solo Piano), "It Shouldn't Happen to a Dream" (Solo Guitar)
Dave Venn was born, raised and received his musical education in St. Louis.Piano lessons began at age 7, followed by saxophone and clarinet lessons in high school, and formal training in clarinet at the St. Louis Institute of Music. While still in college Dave began his professional music career as a tenor saxophonist, performing with the Jazz Central group and various other local bands.Jazz in St. Louis in the 1960s was flourishing - Gaslight Square, The Playboy Club, DeBaliviere area and many other gigs about town. However, there were more opportunities for pianists than saxophonists; thus began the piano career. Dave has accompanied many nationally-renowned singers and instrumentalists who have performed in St. Louis. He is in demand both as a soloist and in larger ensembles, regularly appearing at the top clubs, hotels, concerts, and other venues throughout the area. The Riverfront Times acknowledged this in naming Dave "Best Local Pianist/Keyboardist." The solid success, wide appeal, and distinction he enjoys only serve to underscore his on-going musical growth and freshness.
