Biography

When the time came for the Steep Canyon Rangers to record the follow-up to 2012’s Nobody Knows You, they headed north to Woodstock, NY, to Levon Helm’s famed studio with Grammy-winning producer Larry Campbell and engineer Justin Guip. This was a departure for the band, and they gave Campbell full control over the recording rather than act as their own co-producer.

Editorial Reviews

Deft musicianship, impeccable songwriting, distinctive vocals, and creative arrangements are just some of the qualities that set The Steep Canyon Rangers apart from the rest of the pack. Unafraid to break the mold, whether taking the unexpected musical turn or bringing home the surprising lyric, it's no wonder that Steve Martin chose them as just the right band to record and tour with. Nobody Knows You is the most adventurous and fully realized accomplishment The Steep Canyon Rangers have achieved to date.

Years ago, I wrote about a feature story about this band for Bluegrass Unlimited magazine. I predicted that The Steep Canyon Rangers, by the time their members were thirty, would be well-known far and wide for their brilliant performances and excellent recordings. Now, this tight unit from western North Carolina could be one of the most recognizable bands in bluegrass today. Besides having talent and youthful appeal, their familiarity was definitely boosted by being comedian, actor, and musician Steve Martin's backup band. They were Grammy nominated for their 2011 album collaboration with Martin called "Rare Bird Alert." Following some excellent releases on Rebel Records, the band now debuts on Rounder.

The band's certainly been on a fast nearly vertical track since their 1999 formation and their first gigs at the Mellow Mushroom, a pizza parlor in Chapel Hill, N.C. Since going full-time in 2001, the young, hard-working, and prolific band has toured heavily. By 2006, they'd won IBMA's Emerging Artist of the Year Award, and 2011 brought them the Entertainer of the Year Award (with Steve Martin).

Now, Woody Platt (guitar), Mike Guggino (mandolin, mandola), Charles Humphrey III (bass), Graham Sharp (banjo, guitar), and Nicky Sanders (fiddle) are riding the wave, but not resting on laurels. Platt does most of the lead singing, and the others sing harmonies. I've always enjoyed this band's appealing delivery characterized by power, passion, emotion, and drive. Let's see how much higher this band (named for a stout Colorado beer) can climb with their 2012 release, "Nobody Knows You."

With all the same splendid ingredients of previous releases, "Nobody Knows You" seems to take the soulful band to an even higher plane of contemporary bluegrass musical maturity.

Having hooked up with Steve Martin in 2009, this quintet gained mainstream attention that mirrored the renown they'd built in bluegrass circles over the previous decade. After backing Martin for a tour of his 2009 album, The Crow, and collaborating for last year's Rare Bird Alert, they now return to their own work and original material. The only cover in this lot is Tim Hardin's "Reputation," sung at a tempo that inches towards the Association's 1967 blues-rock cover and with harmonies that expand upon the Byrds' 1968 version. The original tunes are all rooted in bluegrass instrumentation, but interweave elements of newgrass, country and gospel. The songs include stories of earnest courting, lost souls, tenuous relationships and natural pleasures. The band's harmonies are strong, perhaps even a tad in your face in spots, and contrast with playing that's tight and enthusiastic, but relaxed and delicate enough to have soul. The latter is the sort of thing that can escape players with bluegrass-quality chops, and though you get to hear the instrumentalists solo, they do so without having the band drop into the background. The album's one instrumental, "Knob Creek," is fittingly, an ensemble piece. The Rangers are a talented band with taste, chops and enough invention to keep their music growing. [©2012 Hyperbolium]

I own 'One Dime at a Time', 'Have Mercy, 'Lovin Pretty Woman' and all of the albums they did with Steve Martin. I enjoy this cd and it is on par with all of them. The tunes are stuck in my head all day as they were with those albums!

If you like Bluegrass you will LOVE the Steep Canyon Rangers. Wonderful combination of instruments.
Buy the one with Steve Martin playing with them, too!

I just saw this band last night in Grass Valley, CA at the California Bluegrass Music Association Father's Day Bluegrass Festival. Quite simply - they knocked it out of the park, just like this album! Stellar original songwriting, virtuoso performances, and real musicianship make this album a must have. These young guys from North Carolina have the chops and talent to make them the premier contemporary Bluegrass band in the world. As always, the best Bluegrass grows in North Carolina!

Steve Martin is lucky to be playing with such a great band. Bravo!

I am in love with this group. I first saw them during their July 4th appearance with Steve Martin on PBS's A Capital Fourth; (Google it). I just wish I would have heard of them sooner. These guys are NOT Steve Martin's back up band. They are a stand-alone Bluegrass quintet that has produced some wonderful original toe-tapping tunes. That's not to say that "Rare Bird Alert" with Steve Martin is not to be appreciated. I love it too. I'm just saying that they don't need Steve's celebrity to be appreciated. These guys are very talented musicians.

I'd seen the Rangers with Steve Martin on Letterman and really enjoyed them so I decided to go for their new CD. These guys are excellent musicians and need no help from Steve to make great bluegrass. The mandolin and violin performances are superb, with banjo and guitar adding extra depth to the songs. My favorite tracks start about midway through the CD with Natural Disaster and Summer Winds, but the instrumental knockout is Knob Creek near the end of the disc. If you're a bluegrass fan, I think you'll really enjoy this album.
