Incredible Talent, this Suzy Bogguss!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Nobody Love Nobody Gets Hurt (Audio CD)
"Nobody Love, Nobody Gets Hurt" is the first Suzy Bogguss project that I purchased! I've been aware of Suzy as a singer since around 1992, but I never realized just how talented she was until I heard this project! And this recording fully showcases her abilities and her incredible talent! There are lesser singers being promoted in country music these days, but this gal has got a voice that just won't quit!! "I Surrender" is one of the most beautiful songs you'll hear in country music today. "Just Enough Rope" is a great, fun song! "From Where I Stand" and "Somebody To Love" are both great! Harmony is the bottom line on "Train Of Thought"! This Suzy Bogguss recording is PURE ENJOYMENT!!!

Her best since "Aces"!,

As usual, Suzy follows her own musical path and delivers a solid album of songs that has little in common with the typical ear-candy found on the country radio dial. Each cut here is distinguished by its intelligent lyric and wonderful, sometimes quirky melody. Don't be misled by the guest roster: Patty, Kathy and Trisha are barely audible in their background vocals. Frankly, that's all the better. Suzy's voice shines like it never has before, and the song selection is a delightful trip from blues to folk ballads to light rock to bluegrass. This is NOT BACKGROUND MUSIC. It's an album you'll actually listen to, repeatedly, and enjoy more each time.

Suzy is not losing her edge... She's simply refining it.,

It's refreshing to hear an album the artist wanted to make, rather than one that fulfills contract (or fan) obligations. Suzy has definitely fallen into the former vein with her more recent releases: "Simpatico", "Give Me Some Wheels", and her latest one "Nobody Love, Nobody Gets Hurt". With tracks ranging from the traditional Country sound ("Take Me Back") to Ballads ("Nobody Love, Nobody Gets Hurt") to more or less Adult/Contemporary ("From Where I Stand") Suzy seemingly has filled an entire CD with songs that you know would never be sensational hits, but you love them just the same. Suzy also has found a mix of songs that carry an interpretation/feeling only Suzy can put into a song (outside of her beautiful and clear vocals) while not sounding like they were rubber-stamp produced. Additionally, the CD produces a "real" sound with minimal effects that make it sound more like Suzy is right there with you, rather than in some cold recording studio, making this CD a great companion in the car.

Just gets better with each album!,

Suzy never seems to disappoint her fans when they hear her new music. With the album Nobody Love, Nobody Gets Hurt, her talent for pleasing her audience is no exception. Suzy can take you on an emtional roller coaster with the groove of tunes like "Just Enough Rope" and then find your emotional side with songs like "When I Run." Suzy again shows that with each album she makes she only gets better! I give this cd 6 Stars!

Suzy Bogguss is one of the greatest country singers around. Her voice is haunting and material top notch. Don't miss a chance to hear or, better yet, see her in person.

Classic Suzy ... great songs and great music,

Suzy Bogguss just gets better and better. The title track, Nobody Love, Nobody Gets Hurt is a "real story" with a message taken from a play on words. In the hands of another artist it would be heavy-handed but Suzy makes it into a song I can listen to over and over again because she sings it with such genuine feeling. If you liked Something Up My Sleeve, you'll love this one. There is not a false note on the album.

5 star singer maybe, but not 5 star songs on here,

Suzy Bogguss does have a fine voice, I'll admit, and when she puts it to first rate songs, the result is wonderful. But I can't in good conscience say that's what we have here, despite the presence of many songwriters (Kim Richey,Tony Arata,Matraca Berg) whose work I usually love. The biggest problem is the songs are a bit lackluster here and on some of the songs that ARE good, the decisions of Bogguss and her hubby (Doug Crider co-produces with her here) sink the song.
HIGHLIGHTS: She didn't have any chart hits off this from what I understand, but "From Where I Stand" is probably the closest in sound to anything on country radio these days. A newly jilted woman realizes that she's getting her just deserts as her ex who left someone for her does the same again. It's a passable lyric from Kim Richey but she's done better. The low-key "Take me Back" makes use of Garth Brooks for a harmony vocal and it's a charmer. The title cut is an improbable tale of a botched robbery that works nonetheless because of a good reading by Bogguss. "I Surrender" is a tune she co-wrote with Crider and it's a good one. LOWS: "When I Run" is one of the tunes I think was sabotaged by its handling. The lyric about emotional intimacy ("I know tryin' to hide is crazy/Walking out won't save me/My demons only chase me when I run") is a great one from Skip Ewing. But the song is way too overproduced and would have been better off with a more "folk" arrangement: just a little acoustic guitar, maybe some steel flavouring here and there, and a shaker. Lose the drums and piano and slow the song down. The other problem I have is Kathy Mattea, who is IDEAL for that type of understated material, is mixed so low she might as well not be here. Talk about wasted resources..."Family Tree" is a trite number about familial ties. "Just Enough Rope" is a by-the-numbers Nashville throwaway. BOTTOM LINE: There's not enough distinction on here to make me pull this off the shelf much. You'll definitely not want to purchase this one unheard. |
