This review is from: Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan (Audio CD)
Bob Dylan has many detractors who cannot stand to hear his voice. However, what is interesting in hearing this compilation of the "originals" (sort of) of songs he has covered is just how often his own performances improve on them. With his careful guitar arrangements and impassioned vocals, the Dylan albums "Good as I been to You" and "World Gone Wrong" really brought these old songs to life.
The originals are interesting to compare to the Dylan versions, especially to see how he has re-arranged or emphasized different parts of the songs, but sometimes they disappoint. Some of the versions of traditional songs selected for this album are substandard or are very different versions than the one Dylan covered (e.g., the "Hard Times" by L. M. Hilton). On the other hand, if people haven't heard The Mississippi Sheiks, Gary Davis, or Blind Willie McTell, this would be a good way for them to be exposed to a few of their songs. One cannot talk about "improving" on musicians such as this, but Dylan's renditions often add something to the originals. The most peculiar thing about this release is the title, "Nobody Sings Dylan Like Dylan." These are NOT Dylan songs, but his covers of traditional songs, and you have to wonder how the producers came up with this misleading description. |
