Unexpected Treasure!, July 19, 2010
This review is from: Nobody's Hero (Kindle Edition)
I did NOT see this book coming! I am a lover of interracial stories/books, but have to say the conflict can (at times) become a bit cliche. This story is so well organized and written that the "race thing" is not what's center stage. THIS story pulls you in..quickly...and compels you to keep reading. The main male character Ricky is so believably raw that, I must confess, I had a few Eminem fantasies while reading it. :)
For the record, if a person isn't use to slang, and more than a few "F-bombs" being dropped, then they may not be as fascinated as others who've read and reviewed "Nobody's Hero". William Shakespear this is NOT! But what you'll find is that there's actually a chase going on; the guy works HARD for the girl, and the girl demands her respect in this book and makes him wait until SHE'S ready. It broke the stereotypical image of rappers being unlovable because they're so hard, and gave a very realistic look into a person (albeit fictional) who is hard for a reason, but loves just like the rest of us. I loved that about this story. It's not about the sex scenes! Truth be told, I didn't miss them. They do DO THE DO, if you know what I mean, but they're not getting down and dirty by Chapter 2. And when they finally connect (pardon the pun) it wasn't vulgar.
People....it's 99 cents! GET THE BOOK!!!
And Melanie Harvey, you have a new fan! I love this story so much that I'm allowing a friend to borrow my Kindle so that she can read it, too.
LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT!!!

As a librarian, I read lots...and lots...of books. "Nobody's Hero" grabbed me from the first dynamite chapter right through the epilogue. Carolyn Coffman and Rick Raniere are developed as real people with real-life strengths and weaknesses. Even more, Ms Harvey provides believable character development throughout the novel. Incorporating the rap music scene, urban settings, and conflicted characters, the story tumbles quickly toward its conclusion. Recommended.

Choppy but very good, July 20, 2010
This review is from: Nobody's Hero (Kindle Edition)
No Bodies Hero was, at heart, a good story. It keeps the readers interest. Based on concept and content alone I would have given this story 5 stars but the one thing that made this a 4 star was the execution.
Carolyn was a huge Ricky Rain fan who ends up not only meeting him but falling for him and vice versa. Although they meet and fall in love in a short span of time(one week), it does seem longer because the author really went into detail about their time together that whole week. So by the end of the week, you are so into Rick and Carolyn's relationship, you don't even notice how short the time has truly been.
The dialogue was a mixture of true wit, insightful analogies and funny one liners. However, and this is where the 4 stars comes into play, the dialogue was often choppy. At points you don't know who is speaking because often times Carolyn and Rick say things which pertain to his song lyrics (which the reader has never heard) or other events from Rick's past(which we didn't know about). It was like walking into a room in the middle of a conversation where you are expected to know what's already been said or in some cases, being the outsider listening to an inside joke. It was confusing but it did not turn me off to the point where I wanted to stop reading. That was the magic of this book, it gets you get so engrossed with Rick and Carolyn's story, you willingly gloss over it's imperfections.
I think more could have been done regarding the plot with Ricky's ex and I really wish the ending would have been more story book, not that it was bad, I just don't think it gave Rick the brilliant finish he deserved after working so hard but, perhaps that's just life. Also, I really could not comprehend how all of the loose ends were tied up in the end. Yes, I read it and re-read it and I still don't understand it, which was my major and only complaint with this story, at times it was difficult to understand to me. You can understand it enough to get the gist of what's happening in a particular scene but it's not articulated in a straight forward manner.
At heart, this is a good story, and it's long so you will get your moneys worth in terms of length. Perhaps it would make a better screen play. A movie would really do this book more justice. It was still enjoyable so I would have to say, it's worth buying. I think it was a good first effort by this author and I would love to see her do more stories.
