5.0 out of 5 stars Such Stunning Courage and Honesty April 14, 2012
By Zephyr
Format:DVD
I love documentaries and have watched tons of them, and this one is now at the top of my list. I know very little about Thalidomide victims, and this film focuses on the people rather than dry facts. I was shocked to find that they are all now middle-aged people, who have yet to receive compensation from Grunenthal, the maker of Thalidomide, and that 3000 babies died, and about 7000 were born deformed. This documentary is about 12 of them, who decide to pose nude in a calendar.

I'm...having trouble expressing how wonderful this film was. There is great humor, and no political correctness - everyone is so honest with the joys and agonies of their lives, with their self-acceptance emerging as they engage in the photo project. The director himself has trouble with his own project, and opens up more as he meets his old friends and gets introduced to new ones. At one point he explains to his son why he is doing this, that the more you see the deformities, the more you get used to them, and eventually see the people rather than their short limbs. He was right. After about 45 minutes, I just enjoyed watching him find photo subjects and loved the interactions between all these wonderful personalities (astrophysicist, actor, champion dressage rider), and reveled in their honesty and self-discovery. I no longer noticed their disbilities until a woman drank from a wine glass held with her foot, and then I would be reminded of the problems they faced. I am so happy I watched this.

There are some subtitles since many of the subjects are German, but this doesn't detract in any way. Dull minutes are nowhere to be found, and after it was over I still wanted to hang with this group of warm and friendly people.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but Slow June 9, 2013

People celebrating themselves is even in their deformity was honorable, but the child involved was a bit disturbing. It also had quite a bit of stuff that could been edited out.

If you don't remember this time period you will not think this a good thing. I do remember it and to see these beautiful pictures of these wonderful people is just breath taking. To see the courage of all of them to expose there deformities is the beauty of it. I know that it must have been very hard for a few of these beautiful people to agree to so this. I just want all of them to know that they are beautiful and I am so glad that I had the chance to see their wonderful film. Thank all of you from the bottom of my heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Movie April 17, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video
Interesting documentary that I think all people need to watch...as we all have our own physical attributes that other people would consider "not perfect" (hence the title of the movie). I think we can all learn something from this movie

Watching this subtitled film had an eavesdropping quality to it for me, yet I am so glad I listened in/watched along. The calendar photos were so incredibly beautiful to me. I originally decided to watch the film because I knew these folks were around my age and I wanted to learn about their lives. The time was well-spent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting April 4, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video
My mother was offered this drug when she was pregnant with me and she refused, thank God. This was a documentary on some very beautiful people and a drug company that will not acknowledge that these people exist. I believe the company is waiting for them to die so it can be swept under the rug. I was amazed that out of so much adversity these people were very successful and smart. They must have had some wonderful parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal documentary about disability February 24, 2013
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was a wonderful documentary about disability and learning to accept it, and accepting yourself regardless. It is even more amazing that the director is disabled himself.

My family enjoyed this film so much! It is a charming, insightful look at developing compassion for yourself and others, and the joy of finding acceptance about your body and how others see it. This film portrays the joy of everyday existence as it is--funny and bittersweet and full of reasons to stay here and find out what happens next. There are poignant questions asked, of course, and these lovely people seem like they have weighed joy and sorrow and found much to recommend the former. I already knew something about the Thalidomide tragedy from studying history, but I leaned more from this film, and my family was astounded and appalled at learning of the negligence of the pharmaceutical company who created it. I hope the situation improves and these folks get some form of recognition from the company. There is much to be learned from this film and I hope everyone I know will watch it. It is interesting, funny and entertaining, and truly touching. I feel glad to have spent some time absorbing the wisdom and wit of these fine people, who are truly beautiful inside and out. Good show.
