Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Joe Pernice’s slumbery songwriting and deadpan lyrical acumen is deservedly well-discussed. With the release of this double disc (one a live CD, the other a DVD), some of that attention will invariably shift to his band. They’re much louder in the mix, it being a live recording made at Manhattan’s Mercury Lounge in January, 2004. There’s a grittiness to Pernice Brothers live shows. No one’s gonna mistake them for the Blood Brothers, but leave it to production whiz and bassist Thom Monahan to get the sound just right. The group sounds a lot like a great "classic rock" act at their height, and not just for the cover of "Talk of the Town," the jangle-pop of "Monkey Suit" or that Pernice sounds so much like Morrissey on the final track, "Flaming Wreck." If an angry young Elvis Costello had made an album with ‘70s rockers Bread, it would sound exactly like this version of Pernice’s Scud Mountain classic "Grudge F**k". --Mike McGonigal

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent live set of Pernice Bros. tunes..., December 1, 2011
This review is from: Nobody's Watching/Nobody's Listening (Audio CD)
Excellent live set of Pernice Bros. tunes...The band is tight and the guitar/keyboard interplay of Peyton Pinkerton and James Walbourne is fantastic! The live setting brings out Joe Pernice's melancholy pop songs with lots of emotional hooks. The band is smokin' throughout great versions of Working Girls, Sometimes I Remember & Clear Spot. I may actually prefer the live versions to the glossy studio versions, but that would be purely splittin' hairs, cuz these songs are crafted to perfection. A+

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the place to start to hear this great band, November 13, 2009
This review is from: Nobody's Watching/Nobody's Listening (Audio CD)
The sound here is sloppy and fuzzy, which isn't a strength. This band has so much more to offer. Get a copy of the Australia Tour EP for some much improved live Pernice Brothers.

This is definitely the worst "Pernice Brothers" album ever released and arguably one of the worst albums ever released period. It's not the performance that's so bad, it's the mix - or lack thereof. The "Pernice Brothers" are known for their vocals, harmonies and lyrics and the way this offering is mixed, you literally can't hear any of the aforementioned. All you can hear is guitar. If this is your introduction to the band, you won't go back for more and if you're already a fan, you'll be totally disappointed. Save yourself the pain and pass on this one.
