Nocturnal Journeys, the new CD by ground-breaking ensemble Campanile, is a feast for the spirit as well as for the ears. Campanile is like no other musical group in the world, putting forth a mixture of handbells, keyboards and percussion merging into a silky blend of harmonies which transport the listener into a new world of sound. NJ is a concept album using themes and stories to complement the mysterious, dreamy nature of the music.

Nocturnal Journeys is full of highly original material. There are New Age sounds, such as those on Kevin McChesney's "Labyrinth of Seas", with its pleasantly driving 7/8 beat and smooth melodies. "Guardian Angel", composed by Campanile keyboardist Alby Potts, combines the crystalline textures of handbells with keyboard effects, resulting in a thoroughly mesmerizing sound. Campanile member Rima Greer's "Wings Through Twilight" is positively spooky, as the listener imagines walking through a dark Italian city street as bats swoop overhead. Other songs, such as "Damp Corridor" by Cathleen Crone, have a quirky, funky sound unlike abything one would expect from an ensemble comprised primarily of handbells. "In the Land of REM", by Eli Villanueva, is a wild and crazy depiction of a dream teetering on the edge of becoming a nightmare.

Campanile has come up with a great concept and a gorgeous sound. The production quality is well balanced and seamless. "Nocturnal Journeys" is a pleasurable destination for any fan of unique sounds, engaging rhythms and silky harmonies.
