A boy and his mother explore the magical nocturnal world and all its mysterious creatures. Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3. Yolen's short ode to evening touches upon the moon and fireflies, moths, an owl, and small nocturnal animals. Double-page paintings of a nighttime countryside feature flat figures of a boy, his mother, and their dog outside their lighted house. Hunter's simple scenes are nicely textured with cross hatching, and her homely animal portraits?a bat in flight, a squirrel asleep in a tree hole, a raccoon, an owl, and a sleeping dog?are appealing. The simple scheme of winding down the day ends first in the boy's bedroom?"Tucked up under eiderdown/I nestle down, wrestle down/my hullaballooning thoughts/and drift through dark into dreams." The concluding dreamscape places the boy's bed back in the outdoors amid the grasses, fireflies, and night sky. The pictures illuminate the poem and make it more concrete for younger children, adding setting and a cast of characters to tell their own small story. An appealing addition to the shelves of bedtime books.?Margaret Bush, Simmons College, Boston

5.0 out of 5 stars An Ethereal Bedtime Story, September 9, 2005
This review is from: Nocturne (Hardcover)
Nocturne is a quiet night time lullaby that introduces children to all of the creatures that wander about in the velvet dark of night. The text is complimented quite nicely by the calming, ethereal illustrations.

My four-year old daughter really enjoyed looking at the pictures of the nocturnal animals and asking me questions about them.

The only thing that I would say is negative about the book, is the cost. I went to the library for my copy. $62.00 sounds pretty high for a copy. Maybe it's a typo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, December 1, 2011
This review is from: Nocturne (Hardcover)
I've always loved Jane Yolen's works, and recently started reading her children's books to my young children. But this book was breathtaking. The imagery and descriptions are so rich. I checked it out of the library, but now I'm on the hunt for a copy for my own bookshelf. I noticed she has written a book of poetry for children, and I can't wait to check that out of my library next!

This book has a wonderful soothing rhythm. It FEELS like a bedtime story. This book is out of print, but there of often reasonably priced used copies, and I think they are worth it. My children love this book.
