Fabulous performance, decent mixing, January 6, 2003

I just received my copy of this video yesterday (as well as the Three of a Perfect Pair video), and have watched it once so far. This review represents my first impressions.
First, the performance is awesome. From the opening moments where Bill Bruford kicks off "Waiting Man", to the end of "Larks' Tongues in Aspic Pt. II" the performance is tight yet experimental, inventive yet professional. It is hard to imagine that they were the opening act (for Roxy Music on this tour)! I watched this with someone for whom this was a first-time King Crimson experience, and by the time we watched "The Sheltering Sky" it was noted that "this band does something interesting with each of their songs". This is my first time witnessing the 80's King Crimson in action, and the show does not disappoint.
This is not to say that the video is perfect. The only reason it did not receive a perfect rating from me has to be because of the mixing. Robert Fripp is not balanced in the mix at all, and often you can only barely hear him, this after watching the video in 5 speaker surround sound. It is too bad, because at times you are watching a 4-piece band and hearing a 3-piece. "Larks' Tongues in Aspic Pt. II" suffers more than the other pieces in this context, as the balance between the 2 guitarists is paramount for this song. Still, it is only a minor complaint, and if you are a fan of this band you will still need this video, especially since "Neal & Jack & Me" and "The Sheltering Sky" as performed live are unavailable elsewhere (outside of the Collector's Club).
So, summing up, this is a 5-star video which is made in to a 4-star video by slightly marred production.
