AN EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION TO A GREAT AUTHOR/SINGER,
This review is from: Noites Passadas (Audio CD)
Had he decided to sing in English , Sergio Godinho would probably be by now one of the most rated composers/singers in Europe and even the world . But , since he only sings in Portuguese , that is not the case , at least in terms of massive popularity.Still , even for those who do not understand the portuguese language , the musicality of Sergio's compositions , his unique blend of portuguese folk influences with rock , pop , jazz , brazilian and african music , plus a touch of "chanteur" a la Jacques Brel , makes it well worth listening to his music . For those who speak and/or understand portuguese , then there's a big extra : Sergio Godinho is , above all , an extraordinary poet , a man that tells stories of everyday life and still finds humour , beauty and transcendence amidst all the plagues of human life , be it treachery , injustice , hunger , poverty , greed , lack of love , or just plain stupidity . By the way , he is also an excellent writer of books for children . This particular album is a very good introduction to Sergio's work , it's a live album recorded at two different theaters in Lisbon in 1993 and 1994 . I particularly like all the songs in the album , but if you press me to recommend one or two I would go for "O primeiro dia" , in which Sergio talks of aging and the different views on life that come with the years , but still with a last touch of hope and wisdom ; and "É terça-feira" ( It's tuesday ) , yet another simple story about a girl that not only sells goods at a country fair , but at the same time is looking for a better life . I strongly recommend this album , and for those interested , I just learned that a new album is in the works , one which will be a retrospective of Sergio's 30-year musical career , and will concentrate on his love songs .
