Amazon.com Hands-On Review

Nokia's 6010 GSM handset is the low-cost entry into Nokia's 6000 series business oriented devices. While it shares some of the visual stylings of handsets such as the 6610, its simpler feature set and significantly lower cost make it perfect for the pre-paid plans that it is often bundled with.

The 6010 might not have all of the flash that the current crop of multi-megapixel cameraphones offer, but it does cover the base requirements very well. Standard features include a 4096 color display, polyphonic ringtone support, and a megabyte of free memory that can be used for adding ringtones and wallpapers to the 6010.

Physically, the 6010 is fairly typical of a candy bar style handset. It weighs 3.9oz and measures up 4.7" x 2.0" x .9" in size. It has a very comfortable keypad, with sufficiently large and spacious keys. It does lack a joystick or a directional-pad, though, offering only a two-way scroll control that is located between the two soft-keys and the send and end buttons. There are no dedicated volume keys on the 6010; it relies on the two-way scroll control for that.

One standard feature targeted at business users is the fine profiles system that includes timed profile support. Timed profiles can be activated with a specific end time, causing the phone to automatically revert to the normal profile after a certain time has been reached. This is great for meetings and lunches, so that you can rest assured that your phone won't go off at an inappropriate time, yet still not have to worry about forgetting to turn the ringer back on after you are done. The utility of this function is compounded even further by being able to restrict inbound calls when a particular profile is active to only those people in a user-defined group, such as VIPs, coworkers, or family.

Other features of interest include a calendar and contacts system that can be sychronized with a central server over the air. You need access to a SyncML server, available from service providers or your company, but once that is taken care of, your phone will be brought up to date simply by selecting the Synchronize option from the 6010's Connectivity menu. Other features that can help keep you organized include a calculator, a stop watch, a unit converter, and voice commands for audible battery and signal strength indicators, which are great for the blind.

In terms of regular phone performance, the 6010 does quite well. The call audio quality it puts out is good, and the internal antenna seems pretty good at finding and holding on to a signal from the 850 and 1900Mhz GSM bands. The battery also performed quite well, managing over 9 hours of talk time in our tests - exceeding Nokia's claims. Nokia states that the 6010 should be capable of up to 10 days of standby time, as well.

The previously mentioned contacts system is capable of storing up to 5 phone numbers for each of 500 persons. You can set the type for each number, too, meaning that you can differentiate between home, work, and mobile numbers. You can also define which number is the default number for the contact. On top of that, you can also add other details, such as an email address, a web site URL, a street address, or a note. Searching for contacts when you wish to place a call is simple. You have the choice of scrolling through the entire list, or you can search for a contact by typing in the first few characters of the name. The more letters you enter, the further narrowed down the list becomes.

The 6010 works out to be a very solid entry-level handset. It lacks some of the bells and whistles of Nokia's high-end phones, but it has all of the functionality that most users really need, such as good reception, picture and text messaging, and a vibration alert.

Pros:

  • Inexpensive
  • Good battery life
Cons:
  • No camera
  • Small display

What's in the Box:
Nokia 6010 handset, battery, charger, hands-free headset, SIM card.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicely Designed Phone, November 4, 2004
This review is from: Nokia 6010 Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone)
If you're not wedded to the folding-style, this is an excellent phone. Perhaps the best thing about it is its keypad: dialing the numbers is almost as easy as doing so on your home phone. You can also store multiple phone numbers under a single name and "tag" each one with a little icon that lets you know if it's home, mobile, work, etc. You can add a "voice tag" to 10 numbers of your choice: just hold the contacts button for a full second, speak the person's name, and the phone automatically dials the number. The sound is quite good for a cell phone. The battery has a decent long life before it needs recharging. A small rubber pad built into the back of the phone prevents it from sliding when lying on hard surfaces. The only criticism--and it's a small one--is that there's no quick way (at least none that I've found) to put the phone on vibrate alert (like pressing and holding down the "#" key, e.g.). You have to go Menu-Profiles-Silent-Select (which is not too much trouble, but it would be nice if there were a quicker way to do it).

4.0 out of 5 stars Phone, not PDA, August 17, 2005

This phone was a color upgrade from my previous Nokia 6340. The 6340 is a great phone (it survived numerous drops without any problems), but the black/green screen was hard to read, especially at night.

The 6010 screen is color, but not very bright. It's 1/2" shorter than the 6340 (4.5" long). The build quality of the 6010 is not as good as the 6340, but acceptable.

One key point is that the 6010 has no bluetooth, IR, or connectivity cable included. You'll have to buy 3rd party software/cables to connect the phone to your computer.

Since my old phone was on a different cellphone system, I had a new SIM card. I had to therefore re-enter my old phone #'s into the new phone manually.

The 6010 connects to the internet through GPRS, which apparently is not available in my area. My old 6340 had no problems connecting to the internet.

As a phone, it has better battery life(very good), call, and signal quality than my 6340. Which is the reason I'm keeping the 6010. But users looking for multiple functions should look elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good choice for a non-camera-phone, September 27, 2004

This review is from: Nokia 6010 Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone)
An excellent, inexpensive phone for those who want the latest features but DON'T need a camera. Supports games, polyphonic ringtones, wireless internet, IM. The phone has plenty of memory for contacts and extras. It has great signal strength so far, after two weeks of use (Cingular in Seattle). The battery was long-lasting even on the 1st charge.

Some cons:

This phone is a little bulky - slightly thicker than a deck of cards - and boxy.

The keys are hard and very solid; extensive game-playing or long text messages will give you sore thumbs. The keys are hard to press if you use your fingernails (they "rock" without engaging), but they are big enough to hit with your fingertips. It is easy to mistakenly hit 8 instead of 5.

The screen is very difficult to read when the backlight is off, and the light turns off quickly (15 seconds, there doesn't seem to be a way to change this setting). The screen stays lit during games.

This is a NEW phone (Sept 2004), and as of yet there are not very many games available. I have also seen 3rd-party content providers (for ringtones, etc.) that do not support it yet.

Since it isn't a flip-phone, the keylock is important, but there is no dedicated button, nor are there onscreen instructions. (The keypad is locked by hitting * while in the main menu.)

Despite the drawbacks, I am happy with my purchase. Don't buy it just for games (difficult to play/few available), but the other features are excellent. (...)
