Nicely Designed Phone,
This review is from: Nokia 6010 Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone)
If you're not wedded to the folding-style, this is an excellent phone. Perhaps the best thing about it is its keypad: dialing the numbers is almost as easy as doing so on your home phone. You can also store multiple phone numbers under a single name and "tag" each one with a little icon that lets you know if it's home, mobile, work, etc. You can add a "voice tag" to 10 numbers of your choice: just hold the contacts button for a full second, speak the person's name, and the phone automatically dials the number. The sound is quite good for a cell phone. The battery has a decent long life before it needs recharging. A small rubber pad built into the back of the phone prevents it from sliding when lying on hard surfaces. The only criticism--and it's a small one--is that there's no quick way (at least none that I've found) to put the phone on vibrate alert (like pressing and holding down the "#" key, e.g.). You have to go Menu-Profiles-Silent-Select (which is not too much trouble, but it would be nice if there were a quicker way to do it).

Phone, not PDA,

This review is from: Nokia 6010 Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone)
This phone was a color upgrade from my previous Nokia 6340. The 6340 is a great phone (it survived numerous drops without any problems), but the black/green screen was hard to read, especially at night.
The 6010 screen is color, but not very bright. It's 1/2" shorter than the 6340 (4.5" long). The build quality of the 6010 is not as good as the 6340, but acceptable. One key point is that the 6010 has no bluetooth, IR, or connectivity cable included. You'll have to buy 3rd party software/cables to connect the phone to your computer. Since my old phone was on a different cellphone system, I had a new SIM card. I had to therefore re-enter my old phone #'s into the new phone manually. The 6010 connects to the internet through GPRS, which apparently is not available in my area. My old 6340 had no problems connecting to the internet. As a phone, it has better battery life(very good), call, and signal quality than my 6340. Which is the reason I'm keeping the 6010. But users looking for multiple functions should look elsewhere.

Good choice for a non-camera-phone,
By
This review is from: Nokia 6010 Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone)
An excellent, inexpensive phone for those who want the latest features but DON'T need a camera. Supports games, polyphonic ringtones, wireless internet, IM. The phone has plenty of memory for contacts and extras. It has great signal strength so far, after two weeks of use (Cingular in Seattle). The battery was long-lasting even on the 1st charge.
Some cons: This phone is a little bulky - slightly thicker than a deck of cards - and boxy. The keys are hard and very solid; extensive game-playing or long text messages will give you sore thumbs. The keys are hard to press if you use your fingernails (they "rock" without engaging), but they are big enough to hit with your fingertips. It is easy to mistakenly hit 8 instead of 5. The screen is very difficult to read when the backlight is off, and the light turns off quickly (15 seconds, there doesn't seem to be a way to change this setting). The screen stays lit during games. This is a NEW phone (Sept 2004), and as of yet there are not very many games available. I have also seen 3rd-party content providers (for ringtones, etc.) that do not support it yet. Since it isn't a flip-phone, the keylock is important, but there is no dedicated button, nor are there onscreen instructions. (The keypad is locked by hitting * while in the main menu.) -- -- -- Despite the drawbacks, I am happy with my purchase. Don't buy it just for games (difficult to play/few available), but the other features are excellent. (...)

Good basic phone, excellent reception,
By
This review is from: Nokia 6010 Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone)
Pro: Just a good basic "stick" phone like everyone else is saying, and it has great battery life (at least mine does), and a nice user interface -- easy to setup the address book. I'd buy it again.
Con: (1) Very "hot" magnetically -- will make LOUD pops, hums, chirps and squeals on any nearby powered speakers (hey -- you can tell when a call is coming in!), will jiggle nearby CRT monitors. Much more than any other phone I've owned. It's like it's really trying hard to reach out! (2) Display very hard to read in ambient light -- and you have to push a button to bring up the back-light, then "undo" whatever you did by pushing the button. This phone does NOT need a color display -- my LCD wristwatch is easily readable in most any light, but not this phone! (3) Buttons not well placed -- especially the upper two "soft" buttons.

Good average phone,

Someone in my family lost their cell phone on the bus (to protect the guilty, I remain silent) and needed a replacement phone. We decided on the Nokia 6010 basically because of cost concerns. The phone was in our price range. Here are some first impressions on the phone:
Form Factor: This is yet another 'candy bar' phone. It is oblong in shape and has no cover. The buttons are flush-flat and are backlit with a soft glow when any button is touched or a phone call is coming in. The unit is slimmer in design then it's other low cost cousins and is made out of plastic. The phone is slippery and will need a phone cover for the butter fingered. Reception: Pretty good. The sensitivity is a little bit better than average. Sound Quality: Odd. When we were testing this phone out, the caller receiving the call at the other end mentioned that the Nokia's broadcast sounded like somebody talking inside of a tunnel. Lots of echo. Strange. Display: Passing. The screen is bright enough to see in moderate to bright light. The images look a little chunky and the color could be more saturated. But overall, not bad. Ring Tones: Comes with a good variety of ringtones. This model has polyphonic sounding ringtones. This is a fancy way of saying that the sounds are stereo-like and quite full. Pretty entertaining. Navigation: If you have used a Nokia before, you will adjust to the menu system without too much trouble. However, newcomers will find the menus/submenus a bit daunting and non-logical. Read the manual for help. The Nokia menus allow you to enter new phone numbers, activate 1-touch dialing, set ring tones and volume, play games, set a screen image, etc. Overall Impression: Pretty nice basic phone. I rate this phone about a 4.

This phone is totally great. It gets a signal very well. It will work almost anywhere. It is very sturdy, though it is rather heavy and big. It has a color screen, but it isn't very bright or vivid, it is kind of washed out. If you want a basic phone just to talk on then this phone will work for you.

Great phone, except for excessive magnetic radiation,

This review is from: Nokia 6010 Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone)
This a decent phone. To me, the main requirements are that it has good reception and a decent phone book (imagine that - I want to use it as a cell phone!), and I have no complaints about those items. But just as another reviewer said, it goes crazy magnetically. When it's by my computer, my monitor looks like it's on LSD, and my speakers make random techno music. I have no idea how Nokia managed to get FCC certification with this phone. ;-) If it weren't for the EMI stuff, I would give it 5 stars.

a comparison with the Nokia 3560,
By Outglare@Amazon (Bay Area, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Nokia 6010 Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone)
I got this phone because they were offering a promo 1000 anytime minutes (comparable to the Nation 450 plan otherwise) on the national GSM network because i'm such a good customer, and I wanted to jump on the GSM bandwagon soon so that when they started getting rid of TDMA towers, i could accrue more benefits by having a plan for longer. The phone is almost exactly like my TDMA Nokia 3560 phone. Just as an intro, i've mostly had Nokia stick phones.
PROS: (compared to the NOkia 3560. None really. I now have nation wide no roaming versus the previous regional plan, but my peak time is no longer 7AM-8PM. It has more web browsing capabilities (which i don't do from my phone), and I believe that you can download music, wallpapers, and games, although you couldn't do it with the 3560. I've gone through 3 Nokia stick phones, and the main reason i chose this one over the samsung camera E317 flip phone for $50 was because i have extra batteries, AC adaptors, earphone, car adaptor, and case from previous Nokias. Oh yeah, you can also display the DATE as well as the time on this phone, which is useful for me, because i wouldn't know the month without a digital watch, which i don't wear. CONS: 1)the buttons are pretty hard to push, especially the ones near the top. The "send" and left "choice.?" button are way too close, and so are the "end call" and right button. Exactly how similar are these phones? Well, i jsut switched the faceplates to use my old 3560 phone faceplate, and it works fine. 2)Couple of reviews mentioned a hollow sound heard by the person you're talking to. i noticed that whereas the 3560 has a hole in the case near the microphone, the 6010 does not! Not sure how much difference this will make - can't really make a good comparison, because it's 2 different networks. 3)Had a discussion with my friend today, and we were lamenting that cell phone companies may purposefully not give you a regular sounding ring, so that you'll have to purchase one. Yes, the 6010 doesn't really have any traditional rings. i prefer sounds that are a little bit low in pitch, but good volume, and definitely not melodious or cutesy, and there just isn't any that fits that criteria in this phone. 4)earpiece too loud - I'm somewhat paranoid about EM radiation, so i use the headset whenever possible, but even at the lowest volume setting, it's just TOO LOUD. i have to keep telling the other person to speak more softly. i've been holding the earpiece up near my ear with my hands to counteract this, but that kind of defeats the point of it being hands-free. even without the ear piece, the phone itself is very loud. i have to hold it far from my ear, which allows random strangers to hear what we're taling about. in the 3560, there was an "equalizer" function that you could set the base volume to be lower to begin with, and change the volume from that base. not available in 6010. I'm actually thinking of getting the crappiest earpiece i can find that mutes the volume somewhat. 5)also not in this phone is the voice recorder function, which i didn't really use, but it was fun. All in all, i'm not that unhappy with this phone. i don't really like flip phones, and i can preach volumes on the durability of these nokia stick phones (ran over my 2nd nokia phone - LCD messed up, but otherwise working fine). My only big beef is the conversation being too loud... I dunno, maybe i have sensitive ears or something. or maybe the new genearation screwed up their ears with loud music or heavy use of headphones turned on too loud, and nokia is adapting to the times. (kind of like movie theaters nowadays, it seems like...) after all, i don't think that my hearing got better as i got older, right?

Durable, inexpensive workhorse,

I run a fleet of six cellphones in my family which currently includes 3 of these tough, entry level phones. My kids are capable of killing nicer phones, but have had a hard time with the Nokia 6010. It's a basic GSM phone that works like a tank. There's no speakerphone, but the texting features (predictive if you want it) are just fine (kids just have to text). The cool thing is if your kid happens to destroy or drown the phone, try to salvage the SIM card, grab another phone used online (may require unlocking, not too difficult), plug in the SIM card and you should be up and running again. I've done this three times now. It takes a full immersion or a devastating fall to kill this phone. I've used one of these phones myself for awhile (while I was setting it up for my daughter).
There are tons of aftermarket accessories for this phone, and they'll be around for awhile yet.

Amazing Little Phone,

With all of these owners and their new-fangled cell phones with their bells and whistles on them, many people are pretty surprised to see me pull out this antique (in terms of cell phone technology anyway). No special screen. No picture capabilities. Just a Plain-Jane ol' cell phone. Yep. Suits me just fine.
I get great reception. A great basic service plan. And I still have the original battery in this sucker! Can you believe that? Most people can't. But it's true. I swear! I've dropped it about half-a-dozen times, too, but it just keeps on working. Amazing little guys. My little snoogy phone. Yes...my itty-bitty, little snoogy phone. I love you snoogy phone. Yes I do. I love you... |
