Amazon.com Product Description
Keep in touch wherever your roam around the world with the quad-band Nokia 6085 mobile phone from AT&T. Easily pocketable at 3 ounces light and 0.9 inches thin, it communicates over GSM/GPRS networks and offers global voice and data roaming in over 125 countries. Getting on the Internet is easy with support for the GPRS data protocol, as well as the high-speed EDGE wireless data service. Emphasizing ease-of-use and enduring design, this straightforward clamshell phone is packed with handy organizational and communication tools as well as multimedia features such as a VGA camera (with video capture), digital audio player, Bluetooth connectivity for stereo headphones, and an FM radio. Other features include a full duplex speakerphone, MicroSD memory card slot, and a long battery life with up to 5 hours of talk time.

The clamshell Nokia 6085 weighs just 3 ounces and is a great companion for fast-paced globetrotters with its quad-band connectivity and EDGE data service.

The external blue display makes it easy to see who's calling as well as check the time and the phone's battery.
The 6085 operates on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 networks and can handle high-speed data connectivity via AT&T's EDGE network (which stands for "Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution"), with availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways. This third-generation, high-speed, mobile data and Internet access technology is fast enough to support a wide range of advanced data services (with average data speeds between 75-135Kbps), including video and music clips, full picture and video messaging, high-speed color Internet access, and email on the go.

Featuring subtle, organic design lines, a clear keypad and an uncluttered menu structure, the elegant Nokia 6085 is further complemented by sophisticated detailing such as black soft touch paint and chrome accents. The internal 1.8-inch passive LCD has a 128 x 160-pixel resolution and 262K colors, while the external FSTN window offers a monochrome display and measures 96 x 68 pixels. The blue light display on the cover makes it convenient to see who is calling, check the time and signal/battery strength without the need to open the phone.

The digital audio player is compatible with a wide variety of formats (MP3, MP4, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA) as well as protected WMA files purchased from AT&T Music and streaming 3GPP video. The 6085 also includes the Bluetooth A2DP profile, so you can listen to your favorite tunes and the built-in FM radio over a pair of Bluetooth-enabled wireless headphones. The built-in camera captures VGA (640 x 480-pixel) still photos as well as video clips up to 15 seconds in length. It has a 4x digital zoom, and the phone includes in-camera editing features.

Pictures, videos and music can be stored and shared using the optional hot-swappable microSD memory card, which offers up to 2 GB storage (the phone, itself, offers only 4 MB of memory). The 6085 offers wireless connectivity via Bluetooth technology, making communication--such as synchronization between phone and PC, transferring images or usage of wireless enhancements--with other devices quickly and easily.

To enable staying in touch with family and friends, the 6085 offers comprehensive functions for easy messaging and voice communication, including MMS, Nokia Xpress audio messaging, enhanced email and instant messaging via AIM, Yahoo!, and MSN. There's also a built-in web browser for MEdia Net downloads and mobile web browsing. AT&T's MEdia Net service lets you do more than just stream videos--it lets you receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more. The T9 predictive text entry technology is built into the unit, which makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets--a plus for mobile email and text messaging users. More features include:

  • Enhanced voice dialing with SIND: Speaker-independent name dialing on long press volume down key
  • Integrated handsfree speaker with new high quality speaker for better audio experience
  • Personal Information Management (PIM) tools: calendar, to-do list, notes, expense manager, alarm clock, countdown timer
  • Download polyphonic ringtones, games, and video clips
  • Pre-loaded Java games: Sudoku, Galaxy Balls, 3D Golf
  • Preinstalled themes including animated wallpapers and screensavers, color schemes, and picture frames
  • Access your work and private email accounts; supports SMTP, POP3, and IMAP4 protocols
  • Voice recorder
  • USB connectivity (version 1.1); phone supports mass storage mode

4.0 out of 5 stars great call quality, good media player, poor camera., April 18, 2008
By johnetx (Lubbock, TX USA) - See all my reviews
I'm a repairman for AT&T and when my previous candybar nokia had a button that started to stick, I was allowed to choose a phone from all the free phones currently offered to the public. After looking at some reviews and comparing features I chose this 6085. Now this phone gets used and abused on a daily basis while I'm out on the job, but it's kept working well for the 6 months or so I've had it. The sound quality is excellent for both user and the called party, in fact I often have to turn the volume down a bit (unless it's really windy). The speaker phone works well, and it can be used with the phone closed (my old Samsung Sync couldn't do that). I liked the phone so much I bought a microSD card to try the media player and camera. The media player works pretty well, although I haven't tried it with bluetooth headset yet, but I listen to audiobooks through the speakerphone and they sound good. The camera takes only so-so pictures, in my opinion. The colors tend to be off a bit and not too clear, adequate for showing others on the phone, but not too good for email. Battery life has been exceptional, I use the phone a lot and it lasts several days between charges. I also own a Nokia N75 phone for my personal use, but for simply making and receiving calls and for a simple to use media player, I actually like the 6085 better! It's easy to customize ringtones for callers too, which is nice. I'd rate this a 5 if not for the sub-par camera. This is the kind of phone my parents (age 74) would love, because the buttons are large, distinct and separate, the display numbers are large, and the call volume is nice and loud. Sure the N75 has more gizmos, but this 6085 is a great phone that's really easy to use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Signal!, November 13, 2007
By Txred (Lipan, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
We live out in the country and have trouble getting signal, because we are in a valley. We have AT&T as our service. I recently upgraded and ordered the Samsung SYNC phone. Bad decision, that phone would not even get signal at my husband's work. He is right in front of a cell tower. I tried 2 of those, both with the same result. Then I ordered the Nokia 6085. I can get signal everywhere, even in my house. I have not had a phone that did that. I only get one bar, in the house, but this phone gets a signal and holds on to it, no foolin! It's not a fancy phone, or really a very pretty phone, but what good is pretty if you can't get signal. This phone is great for that and it's the second Nokia I have had that got good signal. I think I will stick with Nokia from now on, IF I don't just decide to keep this phone til it falls apart!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally adequate, March 26, 2008
Our latest customer loyalty freebie phones from AT&T (Cathy's is pink, mine is black), the Nokia 6085 delivers the goods. It's also free to new customers who sign up at AT&T's website for two years of service.

The main screen is nearly as sharp as a flat panel PC display, the lighted keypad has honest-to-jeebus keys with big numerals and letters, and the wireless performance exceeds AT&T's own signal strength maps. Sound quality, both speaking and listening, is on a par with a decent wired phone connection.

The mini display font could be a bit bigger. Perhaps a future software update will take care of this as there are plenty of unused pixels when the phone is idle. Alternatively, the phone can display an analog or a large digital clock between calls but no other information like signal strength, battery condition and the carrier's name.

At first glance it looks bigger than, say, a Motorola V220 phone, but the V220's nubby antenna makes it about an eighth of an inch longer overall. Opened, the 6085 is a nice fit for big shovel hands like mine but not too big for daintier extremities. The black model is trimmed with a soft-grip material that lessens the chance of the phone squirting out of your grasp.

2G EDGE wireless technology makes the occasional download much faster than on older phones. If you plan on doing a lot of wireless web surfing (we don't), either choose one of the current refurbished 3G handsets or wait for the next freebie offering, when new 3G phones should be a lot more common. AT&T ships the phone with a 3G SIM card, but that doesn't turn it into a 3G phone.

Bluetooth is built in, a good thing for Mac owners because AT&T doesn't include the USB cable. With a little free open-source software like GIMP and Audacity, you can create your own graphics and ringtones and pocket the savings. $2.49 for a ringtone? Fer pity's sake, I can buy the whole song from Amazon.com or iTunes for 99 cents or less!

The camera and music features might be important to some folks, but we already own a couple iPods. The camera's 640 by 480 image quality is reminiscent of the regrettable Kodak DISC camera, grain and all. Without adding memory via a MicroSD card, you can only record 6 seconds of video. Remember, this is essentially a free phone, whether you're a new or loyal customer, so you get what you didn't pay for.

Oh, and did I mention it can play Yahtzee (which you purchase from AT&T's MediaMall)? For a couple of Yahtzee fans, that was the clincher.
