Amazon.com Product Description

This update to the popular 6101 adds one great feature that many folks today can't live without: Bluetooth. With the 6102i, now you can have the freedom of a wireless headset with this powerful, feature-packed phone -- features such as a VGA camera, a stereo FM radio, a speakerphone, EDGE high-speed data and a whole lot more. On top of all that, you get dual color displays and support for mobile instant messaging, making the 6102i a great companion for Cingular subscribers.

Design
The 6102i's inner LCD display sports 128 x 160 resolution and support for 65,000 colors. Meanwhile, the outside cover of the handset features a supplementary, 96 x 65, 4,000-color display that can display picture IDs, time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. The phone's VGA (640 x 480) camera unit is placed just above this display. Up and down buttons for volume control are placed on the left side, while most of the phone's features and on-screen menus are controlled by a five-way center button on the handset's control pad. There's also an input to accept universal hands-free headsets, as well as USB and infrared ports for transferring data to and from the handset.

Calling Features
The 6102i supports polyphonic ringtones, as well as MP3-, MIDI-, AMR- and True Tones-based music ringers so you can program your favorite songs to alert you of incoming calls. A number of ringtones come preloaded on the phone and more ringtones can be downloaded from Cingular's MEdia Net service. Plus, with the phone's picture ID function, you can assign pictures to your most common callers. If you want to be discreet, there's also a vibrate ringer mode. Meanwhile, voice activated dialing makes calling your friends, family and associates as easy as saying their names. The 6102i's phone book will keep track of all your contacts, and address book capacity is only limited by the phone's 3.5 MB of built-in memory. There's also an integrated speakerphone for talking hands-free and, as mentioned, the phone's Bluetooth connectivity means that your favorite Bluetooth headset is fully compatible.

Messaging, Internet and Tools
The 6102i is built for powerful mobile messaging and Internet capabilities. With support for the MMS (multimedia messaging service), the phone can send picture, video and text messages (Cingular messaging charges apply). When coupled with the 6102i's camera, MMS opens up great opportunities for robust messaging. Instant messaging via AOL, Yahoo, and ICQ instant messaging services are also supported, and the phone ships with a built-in email client that supports POP3 and IMAP protocols.

Getting on the Internet is easy with the 6102i, as well. It supports the GPRS data protocol, as well Cingular's high-speed EDGE wireless data service. There's also a built-in web browser for MEdia Net downloads and mobile web browsing. Cingular's MEdia Net service lets you receive and send emails, read news headlines, get weather updates, download games and ringtones, and more. T9 text entry, a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

The 6102i also supports PC synchronization standards via USB or Bluetooth, which means you can manage and synchronize contacts, calendars and other data with your PC. Nokia's PC Suite application makes this process a breeze. Other tools include an alarm, a voice memo recorder, a calendar, and a to-do list.

Imaging and Entertainment
The 6102i is designed for flexible mobile fun. The built-in VGA camera, which features a night mode for better low-light shots, captures stills and video clips (video clips are captured at 128 x 96 resolution). Meanwhile, an integrated FM radio makes it easy to tune in your favorite stations. Picture effects and custom screensavers, as well as backgrounds and themes, can be set up to fit your personality. And don't forget that the 6102i is a powerful gaming companion with support for Java-based games. Many games are downloadable via the MEdia Net service.

Vital Statistics
The Nokia 6102i weighs 3.42 ounces and measures 3.35 x 1.77 x 0.94 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 3.5 hours of digital talk time, and up to 336 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1800/1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

True Tones, polyphonic tones, mp3 ringtones are another fun feature of this Tri-Band phone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Phone: Easy/Intuitive to use. Lacks memory for large amount of contacts., July 8, 2006
This review is from: Nokia 6102i - Cellular phone - GSM - folder (flip) (Wireless Phone)
i just switched from Motorola back to Nokia after a 4 year hiatus. I've returned this phone before even making a call, so I can't review call quality. My impressions from "playing" with the 6102i the limited time I had it:

-At home the Nokia was at full signal strength (bars) where my Motorola was only partial or would be emergency service only. Nokias always did have better connection than other phones; this one seems to be the same as others.
-Everything is very easy to use and understand. Took only about an hour to go from "Motorola-speak" to "Nokia-speak" in my brain, even with the reversing of some key functions between the two companies models.
-I can't evaluate the call volume since I never made any, but the alert and sounds on this phone are LOUD if played at the highest settings. Almost too loud. I don't know why people are saying they can't get the phone loud enough. My guess is they either have a wrong profile in use (sound settings can be made for different profiles), or they can't figure out how to operate the very simple volume control.
-A simple $9 or $10 plug-in from a 3rd party source made this phone sync with my Mac, even though it is not supported by iSync.
-Bluetooth connection was flawless, albeit on my Motorola I could automatically accept all future transfers from a 'trusted' pairing. It seems the Nokia requires a confirmation every time, although maybe I just didn't play with it enough to find out how to do this.
-The camera took MUCH better and clearer photos than my old Motorola V507
-The address book is how an address book SHOULD be: enter the first 2 or 3 letters and the name pops up (unlike Motorola software where you can only enter the first letter, then you have to scroll through all of that letter's entries, which is frustrating and dangerous when in a vehicle).
-I'm a tall person with large hands/fingers. I originally wanted the Nokia 6682 but once it came out and I played with it in the Cingular store, I realized my fingers were too large for the buttons. I could never dial a number correctly, the keys are small/close enough that I would hit multiple buttons at once. The 6102i buttons were much easier to use, probably because they were flat, rows were spaced apart from each other and in-line with each other instead of raised and curved.

Why I returned this phone:
If you have a LOT of contacts (in this case, it seems to be anything over 200-250), this is not the phone for you. At about 1/2 to 2/3 through my address book, the phone displayed a "low memory" alert. I erased every system wallpaper, screensaver, picture frame, clipping, etc. that I could find, and still could not get my entire address book on this phone.

That said, I wish I could have kept this phone. Cingular's Nokia offering is slim, and I've always found Motorola's software to be sluggish and counter-intuitive. Without another phone available that has the features I need (Bluetooth, Camera and LOTS of contact storage) it looks like I'm going to have to go back to Motorola :-(

I give the phone 4 stars because for the normal/casual user, this phone is ideal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Nokia yet, June 12, 2006
This review is from: Nokia 6102i - Cellular phone - GSM - folder (flip) (Wireless Phone)
I have used Nokia phones for 11 years: 2100, 6100, 5100, 6200. I was nervous about this one having read the 6210 reviews, but all my concerns were unfounded.

For those who complain about low volume through the earpiece, try setting the "automatic volume control" to on. With this option set, earpiece volume is more than loud enough.
