Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

When only the most powerful, most capable device will do, look no further than the Nokia 9500 Communicator. Mobile professionals who want it all -- phone, email, web, contacts, documents, music, video -- rejoice. A unique folding design adds infinite flexibility. Integrated wi-fi, Bluetooth and EDGE data capabilities offers infinite connectivity options. Add all that to the much-loved Symbian Series 80 operating system and you've got a winning powerhouse in your pocket.

Design
At first, the 9500 looks like a typical Nokia candybar form-factor phone with a 128 x 128 screen and the typical dial-pad and navigation button. Flip the cover, though, and you're presented with a gorgeous 640 x 200 widescreen display and a full QWERTY keyboard. Both displays support 65,000 colors. A row of shortcut buttons arrayed above the keyboard makes it easy to quickly navigate to the device's phone, messaging, web, contacts, documents, and calendar functions. A small thumb-stick allows you to navigate through the 9500's menu system. And when you're browsing the web and using other applications it functions as a mouse pointer. A hot-swappable MMC memory card slot is provided, as is the Nokia "Pop-Port" interface for connecting wired headsets and the included desktop charging/synchronization cradle. USB 2.0 connectivity is provided, too, as is a VGA (640 x 480) camera, which is housed on the rear of the device. The 9500 ships with 80 MB of internal memory, and to top it all off, the front and rear faceplates are changeable.

Calling Features
The 9500's address book is only limited by the amount of available memory, and it can store multiple phone numbers, as well as physical and email addresses. The phone's advanced contacts database also supports thumbnail pictures and groups. Meanwhile, the device's built-in speakerphone makes it easy to talk without having the phone to your ear. Polyphonic ringtones are included, and you can use your favorite music (in MIDI, WAV, AMR, AAC, and MP3 formats) as ringtones. Picture IDs let you assign specific ringtones to particular callers. Plus, the phone's Bluetooth connectivity means that your favorite Bluetooth headset is fully compatible.

Messaging, Internet, and Tools
With support for the MMS (multimedia messaging service), the 9500 can send picture, video and text messages. Instant messaging is also supported, and the phone ships with a built-in email client that supports POP3 and IMAP protocols, as well as all major kinds of email attachments. Sending and receiving faxes is also supported.

Getting on the Internet is easy with the 9500. In addition to 802.11b wireless LAN connectivity, it supports the GPRS data protocol, as well as the new, high-speed EDGE wireless data service. When used with a carrier data plan and the phone's USB or Bluetooth data capability, the phone can be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs. There's also a built-in web browser for downloads and mobile web browsing. T9 text entry, a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.

The 9500 supports PC synchronization standards via USB, wi-fi, or Bluetooth, which means you can manage and synchronize contacts, calendars and other data with your PC. Nokia's PC Suite application makes this process a breeze. A number of handy software tools are bundled with the 9500 including a voice memo recorder, a calculator, and an alarm clock. Productivity tools bundled with the 9500 include a word processor, a presentation viewer/editor, and a spreadsheet viewer/editor. These applications are compatible with the most common features of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel (MS Office 97 or later). Robust contact and calendar applications are also included.

Imaging and Entertainment
The 9500 isn't all about getting work done; it's also designed for mobile fun. The built-in VGA camera captures stills and video clips to the phone's internal memory. The device has music lovers covered, too. Load up your favorite MP3, AAC and Real Audio tunes and listen on the included wired stereo headset. Plus, picture effects and custom screensavers, as well as backgrounds and themes, can be set up to fit your personality. And don't forget that the 9500 is a powerful gaming companion with support for Java and Symbian games.

Vital Statistics
The Nokia 9500 weighs 7.83 ounces and measures 5.83 x 2.24 x 0.94 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 5 hours of digital talk time, and up to 250 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1800/1900 frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty.

What's in the Box
9500 handset, stereo headset, lithium-ion battery, travel charger, charging/synchronization cradle, user's manual, application software.

5.0 out of 5 stars Large, but one of the closest things to PC in your pocket, December 10, 2005

Only one downside: when closed, it looks like a cell-phone that belongs in the 90s. But open it, and you get as close to PC functionality as any palmtop/smartphone-sized device would take you.

And the bulk and the weight is there as a price to pay for one essential killer feature: the most usable, reliable and fast QWERTY keyboard in the business. Before buying it, I read some rave reviews about how fantastic the keyboard is, and I was sceptical: I have seen too many lousy little QWERTY keyboards that did not even come close to being a viable typing instrument. I bought it and, before I knew it, I was doing typing on it - sometimes two or three pages - without any noticeable discomfort.

The e-mail client is brilliant, with a great balance of complex functionality and bandwidth economy. The web browser, although Opera-based (it has its limitations), is usable, considering the tiny screen for web work. The screen size (very good for e-mails and Word documents) is the true reason why the functions of Excel-compatible spreadsheet and PowerPoint are really just fancy "can-do" features rather than realistic work tools.

Even synchronization (for a long time, it was a sad shortcoming of Nokia smartphones) has now been sorted, and the supplied suite works well.

A good alternative to Blackberry-type email-only devices in a solid and reliable Finnish build.

5.0 out of 5 stars you're gonna love this phone, May 19, 2006

if you get rid of the stupid connotation that a cell phone has to be so small you have to hold it with tweezers. You're gonna love being able to browse the web on it, watch movies you took of your kid, write sms and take care of business or fun while in boring 4-hour meetings, its calendar which reminds you of all important dates and dates of your life, you're gonna love the fact that when you spot coppers you just have to opent it, put it on your lap and you can continue your convo inconspicuously on speakerphone until darned police is out of your hair. I'm a chick and when I see huge huys handling miniature phones I CHOKE WITH LAUGHTER. This phone can fit in my pants pocket, and when/if I dont have a pocket to stick it in, I've been known to carry it in my boot, bra, and stuck in my pants on my back. And it it fits into a chick's boot/bra, then its not too big for what it offers. I've owned communicators for 5 years now and I will NEVER EVER be without one. Nuff said.

4.0 out of 5 stars Its a business phone, April 27, 2006
This review is from: Nokia 9500 Unlocked Smartphone with 3G, Wi-Fi, MP3/Video Player, MMC--U.S. Version with Warranty (Gray) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I bought this phone last year as a business phone, integrating its capabilities with my work and business life.

Wireless conectivity is a big plus connecting to wireless networks its great i use it home and outside, music is available as an mp3 player, all office products available also camera and a cool keyboard for typing.

Try ti get third party programs such i use as power safe and PDF and other stuff, one big thing from my experience, the phone doesnt recognize my home wireless network while blue tooth is switched on, when i turn it off it doscoveres the network so wireless doesnt work with blutooth at the same time!!

i coudnt find till now a connection to car audio with this phone, so i cant listen to music on my car audio, i coudnt find a separate phone stand also for it.

the package includes the desk stand with charger and head phones only.

As i said its a business phone, i have another phone motorola Razr v3i for daily use because the Nokia 9500 is big i use only for meetings and business life.

THanks,
;)
