1.0 out of 5 stars close... but no cigar., August 31, 2005
This review is from: Nokia HS-8 Activity Headset (Wireless Phone Accessory)
Give an infinite number of monkeys an infinite number of typewriters, the theory goes, and they will eventually produce prose the likes of Shakespeare. Well, it looks like nokia have been trying out this theory with handsfree/headphone kits. And they're nearly there... but not quite.

Why? oh why? oh why? Do all mobile phone manufacturers insist on making music capable mobile phones with no way to get a fully functional handsfree custom set of headphones working with the mobile? why would a "designer" or an "engineer" do that? Have they ever used the devices they design? Who knows, eh? Maybe it's just the universe conspiring against me to make life ever harder ;-)

I've got the same problem as the other reviewer(s) here where the bundled earphones fall out of my ears, so at the moment I can't use my phone's music playing features (which is really annoying), unless I use a standard adaptor and for-go the really useful handfree mic that you get with the "official" headphones.

Until I saw these headphone...

Naturally I assumed the headphones would be of the same or similar quality as the bundled nokia handfree headphone which are just about acceptable. Unfortunately, these headphones aren't that good at their best, but to add insult to injury the headphones (just like the ones bundled!!!) don't fit in your ears properly and the bud shaped speakers are left (by the poor over ear clip design) facing half in your ear and half out. Because of this design (which you might be able to change by heating the plastic to non specification temperatures and re-shaping it) there is virtually no bass, and the tinny sound is simply utter rubbish. In the interests of scientific testing I also forced the ear buds to point directly in to my ear where the sound was much better (but still not great), but unfortunately you can't make them stay there which is kind of pointless.

overall? I still maintain that monkeys shouldn't make headphones, we just obviously don't share enough DNA to copy the design over to humans. I can only suggest they stop paying peanuts for the designs, and start getting humans (or even robots?) to make the headphones. Even if the cost of cash v's peanuts seems initially high and economically unviable, I think the public might start buying these products once they approve of them.

Oh, sorry, just went off on a rant. The headphones? They're crap.

2.0 out of 5 stars wasted opportunity, August 6, 2005

a great idea these headphones seeing as the headphones that came with my 6230 (HDS3) fall out of my ears every 10 seconds and you have to hold the microphone close to your mouth...

So these headphones solve that problem with a great design, clips over the ears to hold them in place, brilliant clip-on mic/control pad that can go on your collar, nice rugged plastic.

However this is all wasted when you plug in... the sound on these headphones is awful, no bass, no sound balance, no subtlety: just blaring all the horrible tinny mids so it sounds like a 50p set of headphones from a christmas cracker. Should have stuck with the other ones which fell out the ears, at least they sound good...

Pointless.

4.0 out of 5 stars makes my phone a decent mp3 player, July 20, 2005

I have a Nokia 6620 and bought it with the intention of it acting as an MP3 player as well as a phone. I put in a 1 GB MMC and loaded it up with AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, and other rock. Overall, the headphones are pretty good, though they could be a tad louder. (You can push the ear buds into your ears further to get louder sound, but they won't stay there.) I haven't yet made a call while wearing them, so I don't know how well the mic works. I think they are worth the price. I'd rate it 4.5 stars if I could.
