I bought this to replace the Nokia Play 360, which was the predecessor to this speaker. I dropped my Play 360 and the speaker inside cracked, so I was interested in getting something updated while also hoping that the PlayUp might be a bit more durable. I think the PlayUp looks great, works well, and sounds good. I can't speak for the durability, because I haven't dropped it...yet.

All that said, the PlayUp is quieter than the 360, heavier than the 360, and gets half the battery life of the 360. The PlayUp is a better-looking speaker, but on nearly every other aspect it is a step down from the Play 360. For the same price, the Play 360 is probably a better value, unless you like the looks of the PlayUp.

So I actually have the MD-51W speaker which just came into stock in the US about two weeks ago. The other reviews on here are for the large MD-100 which has Qi charging capabilities. This speaker does not. There are a couple of video reviews online for this speaker which I watched prior to making my purchase but until you hear the speaker in person you really don't know what you are getting. The design and functionality of the speaker are top notch with the removable battery at the base along with hidden 3.5mm plug there if you can't use bluetooth. The NFC works great pairing the speaker to my Nokia 920 phone fast along with a visual cue from the button on the front of the speaker.

The sound of the unit is a mixed bag. I have several other bluetooth speakers from a small Jensen and G-grip unit up to the Logitech bluetooth wireless speaker which is quite large. The best way I can describe the sound of this speaker is flat with a focus on midrange. If you imagine how a speaker would sound when you turn it and face it straight up then that is the sound you will get from this. I was a bit disappointed in the lack of highs but I'm a fan of clear highs and tight bass in my music. I listend to a range of different types of music on this speaker and wasn't unpleased with any of it but the speaker really doesn't give a life to any of it either. It's simply balanced and warm in the sound which is more than fine. From a loudness prespective the speaker does not distort at full volume although I note that the speaker doesn't get any louder than some of the small units I compared it against but I think it will be loud enough for most people.

Also, the unit is bigger than it looks.

I got this speaker a couple months ago and I really liked it. However it suddenly stopped working. It powers on and pairs but no sound plays through either bluetooth or through the aux cable.

I ordered one and it never worked. The light never came on to indicate that it was working. I requested an exchange and received a new one. That one synched to my phone, but the volume did not work. I returned both for a refund. I bought a Sony and it worked great. A plus is that Amazon was really good with handling the exchange and refund.

I got this as a gift for my birthday, and am extremely impressed with this device. Let me list some pros and cons:

Pros:
-NFC Pairs flawlessly and easily with the Nokia N9, have not tried any other NFC devices yet.
-Bluetooth streaming works very well, tried this both with my Nokia N9 and Lumia 521.
-Speaker has pretty great sound to fill up a room. Perfect for hotel rooms, much louder than my old Logitech set of speakers
-Battery life seems pretty great to me; I've primary been using it as my computer speaker and it holds a charge for a good amount of time before needed to re-up it. I believe this is because I'm using the 3.5MM jack instead of Bluetooh.
-Replaceable battery: uses a Nokia cell battery; won't have to worry if this thing dies
-The device also looks very nice. And as a bonus it has a 3.5 MM Cable hidden under the battery compartment; totally awesome since I still have an old I-Pod I use occasionally.

Cons:
-While the speaker has a lot of sound to fill up a room, the lack of stereo can be somewhat bothersome. Some songs sound just a little "off" if you are too close to the speaker. I find the louder it is and further away you are the better it sounds.
-Also, you can not pair 2 of these devices. This isn't a huge con (since i only have 1) but since i do use it as my PC speaker; I wouldnt mind getting another to pair them up for stereo if it were possible.
-While this device is small enough for a bag, I wish it was a tad bit smaller. It's a little on the bulky side. Although I think the reason for the heft is because of the punch this thing puts out. It really does kick pretty well.
-Cost. When this thing came out I believe it was overpriced.

Good bass, mid-size and circular shape - not so ideal to carry on bags, good battery time. Work with p2 or Bluetooth

I purchased this speaker because of its design and function. In my experience, the design of a speaker that emits "360 degree" sound fills a room better and has a more natural sound than a directional speaker. The universally available 10 hr nokia battery with micro usb charger, smartly stored line-in cable, NFC functionality, available Windows Phone 8 companion app, and the ability to pair two sources makes this speaker FEATURE RICH.

I took my time researching similar speakers before the PlayUp at a discount. I found the PlayUp provides a more dynamic sound than the similarly sized Jawbone, better overall design than the Bose SoundLink mini at a lower price point (see bose charging dock and AC adapter), and have a higher level of refinement over the Nokia JBL Play 360.

The JBL PlayUp would be perfect if it had the bluetooth stereo function the Play 360 has. Perhaps we can get that function in a firmware update??? Nokia/JBL???

If you own a Lumia Windows Phone Device, go get this speaker.

If you have any of the Lumia windows phones you need to get this.
