The Nokia internet Tablet was the Poor Man's iPhone/iPod Touch years before the Apple versions came out. It's more like an internet machine that plays media, while the Touch is the reverse. it can't compete with the iPod for music playing, but it's passable and has the zippiest internet radio out there.

Look elsewhere.

As someone who has owned every Nokia Internet Tablet since the 770, I bought into the idea that the Nokia tablets would eventually have their rough edges smoothed out. It's hard to believe, but I've been using the 770, N800, N810, or the N900 for the last five years- and the...

4.0 out of 5 stars Best screen of them all, February 21, 2009

The Nokia internet Tablet was the Poor Man's iPhone/iPod Touch years before the Apple versions came out. It's more like an internet machine that plays media, while the Touch is the reverse. it can't compete with the iPod for music playing, but it's passable and has the zippiest internet radio out there.

And no, it's not a cell phone, but VOIP works well (FREE calls that integrate well with GrandCentral.com). You can even do half-arsed, hand-held video calls on it - something the Big Guys still haven't came up with yet. And the general internet functionality is tops, even compared to the i-Rigs.

Most of all, it has one the the biggest and most brilliant handheld screens out there. Bigger than the Apples, sharper and contrasty-er than the Archos. Movies - esp. wide screen - look GREAT on this. With the stereo speakers (take THAT, iPod Touch) and prop-up stand, it's like having a little TV media player in your pocket. With the 16 gb cards coming down in price, you can load 2 of those babies into this for 30+gbs of media storage.

You can't do better for this price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Device over expensive Tablets, January 27, 2009

This is was my first tablet and I still love it. It could do anything I expect from a Table/PMP. There are so many free applications available from [...] which can trun this device into a mini computer. I could surf the websites (even flash based, but not all), play music, video and check emails on it, do a text chat and even I could do VOIP though Skype version of OS2008. So overall I like this tablet very much. Only thing I did not like about its shape, the way its has fatty on top and sleek in bottom.

I bought an N800 as an alternative to an e-reader...I figured the added functionality of the internet tablet would make up for any limitations. The only problem I have is that I can't reformat some pdf documents the way I'd like...they're too small for the screen but if I enlarge them, I lose the ability to "arrow" over to the next page. If anyone has a fix for this, I'd love to hear it...Other than that, I'm very happy with it.

Over all this device is a good toy to have. It is a little hard to compare with itouch devices because they are for different markets. Here are the cool things you can do with this. It is a linux OS so it comes with a built in terminal. You can watch movies in a specific format, youtube works fine. I like the online radio feature. I have also added a bluetooth keyboard so when I vnc i can type long emails or other things. I also use it sometimes for VNC connections. If you go to the maemo.org website you can download tons of apps for this device for free!!!

The downside is since the development of apple products and now android most developers have moved on to develop apps for those products and left the nokia N800 series. Not all websites work special withe the new release of html 5 and other plug-ins. I also wish it had a built in keyboard instead of the on screen keyboard. ( Check out the N810 ), skype and other connections are great for chat but will not work with camera.

Over all if you are looking for productivity tool, look somewhere else (Motorola Xoom, Acer Transformer, Acer Iconia, Apple Ipad 2). I keep the N800 on my desk for internet radio, or take to a quick meeting for web surfing and email, instead of bringing my laptop. But if you are looking for small device to surf the web and check mail, this will work fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars N800, one of the best portable internet devices out there., March 1, 2010
This review is from: Nokia N800 (Electronics)
first off lets get to the basics, this is not a phone. the n800 is a internet device, which can do almost anything a desktop can, however there are limits on this little babe. NO need to worry about viruses, well linux applications can only be installed on this, this means you cant just install firefox from the web like you do on your desktop. every application you need is there. I had this tablet for a year and half now, I never get bored with it. streamtuner application lets you stream and record music, variety of emulators like gameboy, gameboy advance. gamegear, nintendo, and super nintendo, media player, youtube application save and download them, google voice application, and the list goes on. people always mistake the n800 for a phone, its not, but you can make calls with wifi though. this is definitely better than a ipod touch, well that is what I think. sound quality on this is amazing, the speakers are very loud and clear. the ipod touch can only be used to listen to music with head phones the n800 can do both. sorry for the comparison I just cant help it. But I can go on forever describing this device, if you are looking for a good internet portable browser this is for you.

Interest in the handheld portable browsing experience?

Look elsewhere.

As someone who has owned every Nokia Internet Tablet since the 770, I bought into the idea that the Nokia tablets would eventually have their rough edges smoothed out. It's hard to believe, but I've been using the 770, N800, N810, or the N900 for the last five years- and the rough edges are still there. In come cases, they're worse than they were in 2005 on the 770. At least, that's how it is with web browsing. I don't know if the software has become more and more bloated or if the web has become more complicated- but it's almost impossible to do any casual web browsing on my N800 flashed with the latest software. A lot of sites will cause it to totally freeze up for a few minutes, only to have it tell me that some script on the page is taking too long and ask if I want it to terminate the script.

YouTube is too slow to use and a lot of newer Flash sites- Hulu comes to mind- doesn't work at all.

The communications software is still also very rough- the promised MS Exchange support has never materialized for my N800, making it useless for getting my work email.

The worst part is that my N800 and N810 are now even more useless than they were before. It seems that Nokia is continuing their policy of not supporting older hardware with software upgrades. Maemo 5, the software that comes with the N900, doesn't run on the N800 or N810 and never will if Nokia has anything to do with it. Frustrating to think that I need to buy a new device every two years to keep my software up to date.

There was a lot of potential with this device, but potential that is destined to go unfulfilled considering Nokia's lack of support for older devices.

After being burnt four times, I've probably bought my last Linux-based Nokia device. It's been fun, but wholly unproductive...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great portable everything, March 10, 2010

This review is from: Nokia N800 (Electronics)
I Purchased the n800 about a month ago and I could not be happier with it. It does everything I bought it for and more. Email, Surfing the web, listening to music, watching a movie, playing games and more. I was very pleased at how strong the wifi is. I am able to pick up signals my laptop can't even see. I also liked how easy it was to connect to the web with my Motorola razor cell phone. With an unlimited data plan for $15 bucks on my cellular plan, I can access the web anywhere, all the time. I also like all the free apps available, and how easy they are to install. Plus it has 2 SD card slots for lots of extra storage. I like that it runs the Linux O/S so there won't be problems with viruses and spyware. I wasn't sure if I would like this because I have never owned a PDA and am not used to using a stylus, but after just a few minutes I was adjusted to using it. I am Very pleased with my Nokia N800, and highly recommend it.
