Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
Optimized for photography, navigation, and Internet connectivity, the Nokia N82 smartphone enables you to travel the globe with its quad-band GSM connectivity and easily stay connected with friends and business colleagues. It features a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and built-in GPS and Nokia Maps software for easy spelunking wherever you may find yourself. The phone also offers Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g) for accessing open networks at home or on the road at hotspots as well as compatibility with 2100 MHz 3G networks (in Europe and Asia). Other features include Bluetooth connectivity for communication headsets, 100 MB of onboard memory, MicroSD expansion, FM radio, digital audio player, Symbian OS, and up to 4.3 hours of GSM talk time.

The pictorially oriented N82 features a 5-megapixel camera, powerful Xenon flash and Carl Zeiss optics.
This unlocked cell phone can be used with a GSM network service provider and it provides quad-band connectivity (850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz). It does not come with a SIM card, and it requires that you provide a SIM card for usage with your selected service provider. When paired with a compatible 3G network that uses UMTS 2100 MHz connectivity (found in Europe and Asia), you'll enjoy a variety of feature-rich wireless services with speeds up to 384 Kbps--from data connectivity to your office to multimedia streaming, and take advantage of simultaneous voice and data services. In the United States and foreign territories where 2100 MHz 3G networks are not available, you'll continue to receive data service via EDGE network (depending on network compatibility).

Phone Features
The Nokia N82 has a large 2.4-inch screen with a 240 x 320-pixel resolution and support for 16.7 million colors. It comes with a new content driven 3D multimedia menu and includes a convenient orientation sensor that rotates the user interface automatically between horizontal and portrait mode. It's based on S60 software operating on the Symbian OS, enabling you to personalize the N82 by choosing from the Ovi family of Nokia internet services, including Nokia Music Store, N-Gage games and Nokia Maps. The phone has a 100 MB internal memory, and it's expandable via MicroSD memory cards (up to 4 GB in size).

The Nokia N82 actually has two cameras, a high resolution camera on the back of the device (the main camera in landscape mode) and a lower resolution camera on the front (CIF resolution, 352 x 288). The main 5-megapixel camera on the back of the N95 supports an image capture resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels, and it features a focus range of 10cm (4 inches) to infinity, up to a 20x digital zoom for still images, and a Xenon flash. (Note that the low-resolution camera on the front can provide two-way video calling; however, at this time no U.S. carrier offers this service.)

Fast camera activation, autofocus with a dedicated autofocus assist lamp, fast reloading between shots and DVD-like quality video capture make it a truly convenient and credible tool for capturing and telling your life stories. You can also capture crisp videos at up to a 640 x 480-pixel resolution at 30 frames per second (fps) in 24-bit/16.7-million colors. Images are saved as JPEG files while videos are recorded in the MPEG-4 file format with the .mp4 file extension, or in the 3GPP file format with the .3gp file extension (sharing quality). Photos and video clips can be enjoyed on a compatible television thanks to the device's TV out feature and support for Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) technology.

Find your way with navigation and routing thanks to built-in A-GPS and Nokia Maps.
With high speed Wi-Fi connectivity and one-click upload to online communities, the N82 makes sharing your experiences and discoveries easy. When viewing a picture or video, simply one press of a button starts uploading it while you carry on using the other phone functions.

The integrated A-GPS and preinstalled Nokia Maps help you explore and locate new places, whether in another country or just around the corner. With access to more than 15 million points of interest, you can locate and navigate to the most interesting sights, bars or restaurants wherever you are. You can also send map excerpts and routes to friends by MMS or save map screen shots to the gallery.

Take your media with you when you're out on the go. With the built-in RealPlayer software, you can stream and download your favorite content onto the N82, giving you access to the latest news, sports, and entertainment updates. Or sync up with your PC and play the music and movies stored on your hard drive. It's compatible with a wide variety of digital audio formats (including MP3, AAC, WMA, and secure WMA). You can listen to your favorite radio programs via the integrated FM radio, and the Visual Radio feature lets you see information about songs or artists.

This phone provides Bluetooth version 2.0 wireless connectivity with EDR (enhanced data rate), and includes profiles for communication headset, handsfree car kits, and audio/video remote control. With the A2DP Bluetooth profile, you can stream your music to a pair of compatible Bluetooth stereo headphones.

Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) technology means that the Nokia N82 will discover, interact with, and control other compatible home electronic devices. This includes PCs, media centers, home entertainment systems, new smart appliances, home automation systems, networked peripherals, and Web-based services. With compatible equipment, you can stream video from your Nokia device directly to your TV, or hear music tracks stored on your PC through your living room's sound system.

5.0 out of 5 stars N95, Improved, February 14, 2008
By Andrew Siew (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I suppose it is only a matter of time before Nokia releases the N82, given the fact that as far as technical specification goes, the N82 is almost a clone of the N95, minus the sliding mechanism.

The software (and possibly hardware) for the N82 has improved, in terms of responsiveness and speed over the 2006-2007 N series models. The screen of the N82, although not the sharpest among the N-series, serves well as a view finder and as a small display for internet surfing. The display rotates according to the orientation of the screen, but if you find this feature disruptive (say if you're lying down while typing), you can always turn the feature off.

In general, the N82's responses are faster than that of the N95, probably due to the fact that it has a simpler electronic architecture (mono-block and smaller screen). There is very little delay when you switch the camera on and off, and the capture time is very short compared to most of the N-series in the market.

The music player built into the N82 is identical to that of the N95, but due to the above advantage, the player never seem to experience any hang-ups when it's used with other applications running in the background.

The built-in GPS feature is a bit of a headache to use due to the smaller screen, and possibly even smaller GPS receiver. I've never needed the voice guidance feature for my GPS receiver before, so not having it is fine with me. To me, the GPS feature has always been more of a gimmick for Nokia to push their N-series devices to the consumer rather than benefiting them in anyway. Because unless you can run faster than Carl Lewis, the GPS locator will not display any movements on the phone screen at all so it won't be able to tell you if you're walking in the wrong direction until you've travelled a few hundred meters down the wrong way.

The built-in digital camera comes with Carl-Zeiss optics at 5 magepixel like the N95, with added Auto Focus assist lamp (a super bright red LED) and a bright Xenon flash. The photos, although do not appear to be much larger (in byte size that is) than the N95's, seems to have less heavy compression artifacts and the flash distribution seems to be well balanced for subjects and objects over 1.5 meters away.

This device is a must have (if you can get over the overly titanium-silver look of the device) for anyone who hates sliding phones but can't live without all the crazy features that comes with the N95 and the N95-8G. The 3.5mm multifunction socket works the same way as the N95, giving you video output, audio output and headset functions as well. I'm not sure at this point just how powerful the supplied battery is, but the phone definately seems to be beating the N95 when it comes to power consumption.. the N95 loses half of it's battery charge halfway through the day, while the N82 appears to be able to stay at full bar 12 hours after its initial charging. Impressive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great phone, December 22, 2007
By J. Kelly (Melbourne, Australia) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was contemplating buying the Nokia N95 8G, but when I saw the specs for this phone I changed my mind - mainly due to the use of microsdhc memory cards on the N82. Although the phone only shipped with a 2G card, I theoretically could expand up to 8G at the present time, and possibly higher when flash memory is developed further.
I guess the phone doesn't look all that interesting - silver on silver, candybar style, average size screen - but at the same time it certainly isn't an eyesore. Go to Nokia for the full specs, but I thought I'd mention a few things I've found handy over other phones of the same ilk.
1. Sliding lens cover protection.
2. GPS, with added voice nagivation. Voice does come at a price, but in the scheme of things it's negligible. I'm not sure text-to-speech is available for this model, and I haven't been able to download it as yet.
3. Having the speakers on one side makes it easier to listen to music or videos - although it should be noted this phone will not stand up on its own, it needs something to rest on.
4. 3.5mm generic headphone jack on top of unit.
5. Music sounds great through headphones, car cassette etc. A nice touch is that if you happen to be playing music in the car through, say, a cassette adapter and the phone rings, you can answer the call using the car's sound system, hang up, and the music will resume, gradually increasing to previous volume - nice touch.
6. Excellent 5mp camera with Xenon flash, plus front vga camera for self-portraits etc. Of course there's the usual slideshow functions, zooming, emailing.
7. 3G networking.

I guess the only real glitch I've experienced thus far (only had phone for 5 days) is getting my iTunes ACC encoded songs onto MusicPlayer.
If you use the PC Suite software that comes on CD, you'll need to download WMP 11, as there's an issue with protected files. To do this you'll also have to download Microsoft's Genuine Advantage Support (WGA) -which I wasn't that keen on.
The way around this problem is quite simple. Instead of using PC Suite when loading songs, use Data Transfer. No probs with protection, WGA etc. Music goes on seamlessly and sounds great.

If I feel the need to add anything further on the N82, I'll update at a later time. All in all, I think one of the best phones of its type on the market today.

3.0 out of 5 stars Caution: no US 3G on this phone, June 24, 2008
I was minutes away from ordering this phone on Amazon. It looks amazing. Trouble is, it does not have the proper 3G antennas for United States 3G (AT&T). So you will only get EDGE speeds unless you are out of the US (Europe, etc). Everything else on the phone will work just fine, but 3G will not.

Just a heads up if you missed the mention of no USA 3G in the description. I just got the N95-4 instead so I could have 3G. The camera on the N82 is much better, but I can't stand EDGE data. Too slow. If you are on T-Mobile in the states, or don't care about 3G, the N82 is the phone to get!
