Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

While the Aqua Velvets have been at the forefront of the surf revival, their music is no slavish rehash of the genre's past glories. Instead the group offers an intriguing mix of surf stylings alongside a more complex menu of echo-laden Ennio Morricone-style spaghetti-Western soundtrack music, Latin rhythms, shimmering psychedelia, and ultrahip lounge lizardry. Nomad is their third and most accomplished effort, thanks to the sensual sway of the title track opener, the gradually building intensity of "Surf Nouveau," the evocative (and wonderfully titled) "Smoking Panatelas on the Blue Mediterranean Sea," and the roiling "Holly Tiki." And that's just the first four tracks. Overall, Nomad offers the perfect accompaniment for your next surfin' safari or even a quiet evening on the couch. --Daniel Durchholz

I would recommend it to any surf music fans out there, take a chance and you will also be delighted.

When I finally tracked down the CD and bought it, I was equally impressed by all of the tracks especially the one titled "Return to Paia".
C. Brown
This is a great CD to pop in when your stuck in the beach house during a rain storm or while you're driving across the desert at dusk.

If you're into reverb, surfing, or just like playing around with an electric guitar, you'll really like this CD. This is not grandfather's Dick Dale/Ventures surf guitar sound, but rather a much cooler, smoother reverb style. Very innovative, cool and very reverb.

Being a long time instrumental surf music fan (Dick Dale, Ventures, Shadows), I was very pleasantly surprised by this album. This album not only stays true to the genre but takes it further than just a revival approach. Compositions and guitar of Miles Corbin is very melodic and lyrical. I would recommend it to any surf music fans out there, take a chance and you will also be delighted.

This is one of the best albums of any type of music that I have ever heard. I could listen to this all day. The first time I played it I thought, this is pretty good, but each time I played it I liked it more and more. This is great in the car, as background music or through the headphones. This music is clean, the instruments are distinct and the melody line is interesting. Overall the album is on the mellow side but this ain't lite-FM this is surf guitar.

I first heard this group while listening to an internet radio station that was playing the track "Surf Nouveau". When I first heard that song I was blown away buy the sound and feel of the music. It made me feel like getting up and moving around. When I finally tracked down the CD and bought it, I was equally impressed by all of the tracks especially the one titled "Return to Paia". This track made me say "Whoa", this one makes you wish you were on a warm beach somewhere drinking somthing with one of those little umbrellas sticking out of it as you watch a beautiful island sunset. If you close your eyes and listen to this music it makes you feel really good.

All I can say is you can't go wrong with this CD if you like modern surf inspired music. This is not straight Dick Dale or Ventures stuff for those of you who are only looking for that kind of music though.

If you like the sound of reverb guitar, you'll like this cd. These guys drag Dick Dale style surf guitar into the 21st century, and they do it with a cool style.

Along with the Mermen, the Aqua Velvets are simply one of the two best neo-surf combos going today. This disc is a masterpiece of dynamics as the songs effortlessly evoke a gentle sea breeze one moment and the thrill of riding a 20 foot wave the next. Forget lame outfits like Man or Astroman and buy yourself a disc from a band that is expanding the genre rather than merely recreating the past.

This the essential Aqua Velvets release. A little bit of Surf, The Ventures and Spaghetti Western combined is the best way I can describe this awesome set of guitar tracks. This is a great CD to pop in when your stuck in the beach house during a rain storm or while you're driving across the desert at dusk. Absolutely stunning set. I am listening to it as I write this, trying to find a negative, but I'm at a loss. The CD runs the gamut from surf rave ups like "Holly Tiki" and odd time signature pieces like "Snorkle Mask Replica, to shimmering guitar pop on "Summer at Dreampoint" and nods to Ennio Morricone on "Return to Paia". What a great album!
