Editorial Reviews

Nomadak Tx, is the soundtrack of the award winning doucumentary of teh same name, in which the Basque duo known as Oreka Tx traveled to several different countries, collaborating with other artists on a largely obscure native instrument, the txalaparta. Nearly extinct by the 1950's, the txalaparta (pronounced roughly "tchala-parta"), is a member of the idiophone family and has been revived recently, thanks in part to Oreka Tx's work. The film chronilces the artists' adventures and musical collaborations in India, Lapland, Mongolia and the Sahara, and is coming soon to theaters worldwide, having won multiple awards at international film festivals. The album is a perfect companion to the film, featuring teh compelling sounds of the txalaparta, which consist of complex, lightning-fast patterns struck upon wooden planks by the artists with think wooden pestle-like sticks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful crisp recording of amazing performances., May 19, 2010

This review is from: Nomadak Tx (Audio CD)
This amazing recording is a must for fans of the mallet instruments. The rhythms and timbres produced by the txalaparta (a wooden ideophone of ancient Basque origin) are pleasant enough to appeal to mainstream listeners, yet unique and challenging for those who like their music with an edge. The sound is somewhat akin to a bamboo gamelin or balophon and the varied performance locations and the quality and artistry in the performers and their guests remove any risk of redundancy. When I first purchased this, it went into heavy rotation immediately and still remains one of my favorite, if not the favorite, purchase of 2009. If you or a friend find Basque culture fascinating, that alone would make this a manditory purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indescribable, June 28, 2009

This review is from: Nomadak Tx (Audio CD)
A stunning CD that defies categorization.

Based on the work of two Basque musicians who tour the world collaborating with local musicians and incorporate their traditions with the indigenous style.

Every track is different and the different contributions from around the world are each stunning in their own way, but they are all well-produced, and ultimately tuneful and melodic.

And if that wasn't enough, if features the best throat-singing since Baby Gramps.

9 out of 10.
