Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8–10—This sequel to I Was a Non-Blonde Cheerleader (2005) and Brunettes Strike Back (2006, both Putnam) finds Annisa Gobrowski and her cheerleading squad, the newly crowned national champion Sand Dune High Crabs, facing a new challenge—their team is going coed. At first, Annisa is pumped—especially after her boyfriend makes the cut—but, before long, she finds herself facing off against Daniel in an all-out battle of the sexes. In the end, school spirit wins out and the girls and guys learn to work together, but not before both sides pull pranks on each other that not only threaten the teens' relationship, but also that of their two coaches. Fans of the first two books will eat up this latest installment and readers not familiar with Annisa and the Crabs will find themselves scrambling to catch up.—Robyn Zaneski, New York Public Library

From Booklist

This third title featuring non-blonde Annisa Gobrowski resembles the previous books in its snappy dialogue and details about cheerleading as sport and social world. In this installment, boys are admitted onto the team, a difficult transition, but one that has its perks: more challenging stunts and, for Annisa, the thrill of working with her new boyfriend, Daniel. The team eventually rallies together, having learned that the addition of the boys was a good thing for all. Character development is too thin to pull in readers who aren't cheerleading fans, but those who know the series will be thrilled to have another book that celebrates the sport. an excellent conclusion to the non blonde cheerleader series, but hard to believe? male cheerleaders? sorry, but this skeptic cheerleader doesn't believe that would work out so well. Also, the cover is not good. the girl featured looks nothing like a cheerleader, just a brunette model stuffed into the uniform and told to pose. the boy, presumably daniel healy, is also not what i'm sure fans of the series picture him as.

I have read all of the books in this series and fell in love with the first book.

Unfortunately, as this series is going on - I am starting to feel as though the storylines are getting less interesting. I think what worked so well in the first book was the conflict that existed with Anissa and the rest of the cheerleaders.

While the author has tried to reproduce this in a somewhat clever way, the story did not work for me.

I think what bothered me about this book was the axis towards everybody else - but our main heroine. There was way too much being done and said about the 'boys' and while the author did try to give Anissa a voice and a conscience - it failed. In the end, the story seemed to me to be about a girl and her boyfriend - and they were not that interesting.

I am not sure what would revive this storyline, but its definitely going in the wrong direction right now.

Good for ALL high school students, their parents, teachers and administrators to read. I am a retired school superintendent and ALL students experience this type of treatment. This is definitely a type of school bullying and it has to stop. I feel it would make excellent MANDATORY reading for high school freshmen. A wonderful part of this wonderful three part series.
