Review

An excellent comprehensive guide to help doctors make the giant leap from clinical to non-clinical careers. It is possible to do it and continue to keep food on the table! --Neil Shulman, MD

I especially like the format with the bulleted executive summaries and the use of punchy real-life stories to bring home the points. My only complaint is that I did not have access to this book when I began my journey in 1996. --Kenneth H. Cohn, MD, MBA, FACS

Of great use in making a decision about a new career in a nonclinical situation....I have never seen another book that provides the information that is contained in this one. --Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. 52(2):228, February 2010

This book just has random examples from different people in the industry. The book doesnt really help you figure out how to change your career or whether you should. It doesnt go into what careers are out there and what background experience you need for these positions. SEAK is scamming physicians by marketing this book. Use common sense and do your own research, it will help you in the long run.

Physicians now face new and unforeseen hurdles in practicing the field that they love. From managed care, through coding and compensation, the field of medicine is changing. If you are thinking about changing careers, dual careers or just want to explore other career possibilities, this is the definitive book. It's written by Steven Babitsky, Esq. and James J. Mangraviti, Esq. of SEAK, Inc., two experts who have assisted thousands of physicians transitioning into non-clinical careers. This manuscript was conceived from their annual fall SEAK Conference (nonclinicalcareers.com) for physicians considering transitioning to non-clinical careers. This September 2010 SEAK, Inc.'s Conference, "Non-Clinical Careers for Physicians", was attended by over 200 physicians from residents to retiring physicians and all specialties. The seminar presenters, themselves veteran physicians who changed careers, were consulted in the writing of this publication, thus giving this book authenticity and insights into each subject area and sound general advice. This work is useful for any stage in one's career. Older physicians will find useful references to new required online job search tools, while younger physicians will benefit from the guidance in highlighting their strengths, making them far more marketable in a diverse variety of career paths. Notably, there is a trend toward medical conferences and internet sites dedicated to physicians in or transitioning into non-clinical careers.

There are industries and organizations which are aggressively looking for physicians because of their unique skill sets. Over 20 career opportunities are discussed in this book including: consulting, biopharmaceuticals and medical devices, financial investing, informatics, and medical inventions.

Dangles the promise of finding high paying non-clinical careers- it boils down to pharma/device/utilization review/expert witness. No specifics on anything else (want to be a writer, some docs have written books. Want to be on tv, Sanjay Gupta made it work. Thanks.). I paid more than I thought I should for this book in hopes there would be something more than what I already know.
