One of the most underrated albums of all time..., October 17, 2001
This review is from: Non-Fiction (Audio CD)
A lot of people consider this album the death knell for Black Sheep. They will tell you that there are absolutely no redeeming qualilties in this album. As I sit back and listen to this album, I can't believe that the people who came to these conclusions have even listened to the same album I am listening to.
People think that Mr. Launge abandoned the original sound with this album, but songs like "The Autobiography", "Gotta Get Over", and many others, are not very far from the original jazzy sound. People think that Dres has lost his touch as a lyricist, but his narrative in "Autobiography", as well as his humor and wittiness through most of the album prove otherwise. For the most part, the Black Sheep were in full form here.
There are a few flaws, however. Those looking for another "Choice is Yours" will be dissappointed because of the lack of major hits (come to think, how 'B.B.S.' didn't blow up is a mystery to me). Some of the guests make lackluster spots, like A.G. (... the red, white, & blue/I'm with the black, black, black"?), as well as Dres' thugged out crew, the Legion.
Overall, this is a solid album that is put in the same catagory as Tribes BEATS, RHYMES, & LIFE and De La Soul's STAKES IS HIGH; albums that had the high expectations for being follow-ups to classics, and albums that are pretty much hated on general principle.
Don't go with the consensus-check it out for yourself.

The best Native Tongue you've never heard!, November 20, 2002
This review is from: Non-Fiction (Audio CD)
Black Sheep aren't the best known or most popular of the Native Tongue family, but no one can deny that they left their mark on hip-hop. What suprises me is that lots of people who are down with Native Tongue have never heard of this album. The beats, the rhymes, everything about this album is tight. It can hold its own with Low End Theory, Buhloone Mindstate, or any other Native Tongue classic. Check this CD out! There isn't a track on it that's missable. If you like Black Sheep or any of the other members of the Native Tongue family then you have to own this CD. You don't know what you're missing!

Pure Dopeness, January 18, 2002
This review is from: Non-Fiction (Audio CD)
I'm just listening to this right now, for the first time in a few years. I actually came on Amazon looking to see if this was indeed Black Sheep's last album; sadly, it is. It's really too bad, because Non-Fiction is a great album. The production is amazing, and Dres of course is phenomenal. Mr. Lawge (sp?) sounds mad old school, and his rhymes are the one weakness of the album, in my opinion. But this dynamic duo only made two albums, and if you don't own both of them, then you're missing out on two of the classic albums of the Golden Age of Hip Hop. Now where did my Low End Theory tape go?
