4.0 out of 5 stars One of the most underrated albums of all time..., October 17, 2001
By
Phil Watts, Jr. (Petersburg, VA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Non-Fiction (Audio CD)
A lot of people consider this album the death knell for Black Sheep. They will tell you that there are absolutely no redeeming qualilties in this album. As I sit back and listen to this album, I can't believe that the people who came to these conclusions have even listened to the same album I am listening to.
People think that Mr. Launge abandoned the original sound with this album, but songs like "The Autobiography", "Gotta Get Over", and many others, are not very far from the original jazzy sound. People think that Dres has lost his touch as a lyricist, but his narrative in "Autobiography", as well as his humor and wittiness through most of the album prove otherwise. For the most part, the Black Sheep were in full form here.
There are a few flaws, however. Those looking for another "Choice is Yours" will be dissappointed because of the lack of major hits (come to think, how 'B.B.S.' didn't blow up is a mystery to me). Some of the guests make lackluster spots, like A.G. (... the red, white, & blue/I'm with the black, black, black"?), as well as Dres' thugged out crew, the Legion.
Overall, this is a solid album that is put in the same catagory as Tribes BEATS, RHYMES, & LIFE and De La Soul's STAKES IS HIGH; albums that had the high expectations for being follow-ups to classics, and albums that are pretty much hated on general principle.
Don't go with the consensus-check it out for yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Native Tongue you've never heard!, November 20, 2002

Black Sheep aren't the best known or most popular of the Native Tongue family, but no one can deny that they left their mark on hip-hop. What suprises me is that lots of people who are down with Native Tongue have never heard of this album. The beats, the rhymes, everything about this album is tight. It can hold its own with Low End Theory, Buhloone Mindstate, or any other Native Tongue classic. Check this CD out! There isn't a track on it that's missable. If you like Black Sheep or any of the other members of the Native Tongue family then you have to own this CD. You don't know what you're missing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Dopeness, January 18, 2002
This review is from: Non-Fiction (Audio CD)
I'm just listening to this right now, for the first time in a few years. I actually came on Amazon looking to see if this was indeed Black Sheep's last album; sadly, it is. It's really too bad, because Non-Fiction is a great album. The production is amazing, and Dres of course is phenomenal. Mr. Lawge (sp?) sounds mad old school, and his rhymes are the one weakness of the album, in my opinion. But this dynamic duo only made two albums, and if you don't own both of them, then you're missing out on two of the classic albums of the Golden Age of Hip Hop. Now where did my Low End Theory tape go?

5.0 out of 5 stars A great second coming from the classic group, May 6, 2005
This review is from: Non-Fiction (Audio CD)
The second album from the real hip hop representers, this was tight but didnt get as known as the first as there was so many things out in 94 and people just slept on it. The beats are nice and its just off being as much of a classic as their first. Dres has some good rhymes put down again and it stays in the black sheep flavour. Its a shame they were over didn't do any more after this and dres' solo was a bit weak with only a couple of good tracks but nothing like the black sheep albums. Make sure you get this, classic from an original hip hop group. Later!

4.0 out of 5 stars "...Don't Sleep on that "Non Fiction" hit by Black Sheep...", February 13, 2001
By

This review is from: Non Fiction (Audio CD)
"Non Fiction" by dres and Mr. Lawgne, epitomizes the curse of the sophomore album, and the maturity of talents that often develop in this crucial stage of an artist(s) career. Mr. Lawgne displays a much more jazzier side to his production, which still retains a certain grittiness. Dres's rhymes are much more introspective on this set, but, unfortunately, occasional non sequitur tangents detract from the cohesion of some songs. With the exception of a couple tracks, the party vibe is much more toned down on "Non Fiction", thus allowing for Dres and Lawgne to elaborate on their skills in ways that are not evident on "A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing". Like many follow-up albums, "Non Fiction" has its hits and misses. However, there is enough material to satisfy original fans, and to quite possibly capture a new audience that digs in the crates for noteworthy, mid-nineties hiphop.

5.0 out of 5 stars A piece of RAP mastery, August 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Non-Fiction (Audio CD)
This CD is the best rap CD I have ever heard, songs like "City Lights" really show the MC's skill in creating as well as delivering rhymes, and the beats are very original, which seems to be the trademark of this duo. Definitely a must buy, possibly the best of the genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Oh my..., July 3, 2009

This album is ridiculous. The beats are like that, and of course Dres is on point lyrically. And Lawnge doesn't even talk about his johnson as much. I'm saying mercury fronted on the promotion. They could of put out some hot singles from this, its sad, so much potential. A dream differed.

4.0 out of 5 stars HMMMMM, I DON'T KNOW, January 23, 2007
This review is from: Non-Fiction (Audio CD)
now for me, i did not enjoy this one as much as the first one. everytime i hear this, i think of JINGLE JANGLE. it's like it's a cool vibe, but iu just don't dig it as much. it's not bad, but it's not good. now AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL is a wonderful first song. i can without NORTHSOUTHEASTWEST. WE BOYS with that group, leigon, was alright. other than that, listening to this makes me yearn for A WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING. still, i'd rather listen to this than unk or young joc or rick ross anyday. again, i guess i'm just an old-fashioned cat.

5.0 out of 5 stars slept on, April 25, 2003

badly. Well it took me this long to realise this record existed. Laid back beats, MCs flowing on verse after verse. I didn't like their debut -- too goofball, but this is highly reccomended for all 'real' hip-hop fans.

this album should be heard! i have been a hip hop fan since more than 15 years now, and this album is one of my "top 5", i consider it priceless and more magnificent than any thing i own.

though the album didnt get enough attention and its life cycle was very short, the fact remains that it is one of hip hop's greatest heritage. i recommend it to all hip hop fans, especially the ones who search for deep lyrics and amazing underground music produciton.
