Rotting Christ... there's just nothing quite like them, November 6, 2001

Despite how much I tried to avoid this band, due to that ridiculous name, I couldn't resist them. I've become a real die-hard fan of the group, and though I haven't had much experience with their extremely early work (pre Mighty Contract), from what I can tell, Non Serviam was Rotting Christ's first attempt to tone down the complete speed and thrashing brutality and come up with something a little more musical. Most of this album is fairly mid-tempo, and to be honest, it all sounds pretty much the same after a while, so if you don't dig the sound, you'll get really tired of this CD very quickly. But even though this album isn't as energetic as Thy Mighty Contract, or as evolved as their work from Triarchy of the Lost Lovers on, there really is no other CD that sounds quite like this.
That being said, the production on this CD is absolutely terrible. Unless you are a huge RC fan (like me) you probably won't have the patience to sit through it. It's a real shame, because songs like Non Serviam and Mephesis of Black Crystal are beautiful songs that would be totally amazing if they didn't sound like they were recorded in a hall closet. Anyway, the music is great, as you'd expect from Rotting Christ, and there is a very slow, gloomy, plodding mood here that is surprisingly cool. If you can get past the dismal production (and the steep price tag), this album is worth picking up for the serious Rotting Christ fan.
