A fabulous, kinky romp into Clubland with two English boys,

Soft Cell, best-known for their stark, yet captivating electronic soul cover "Tainted Love", took a trip (literally!) to New York City to remix some of their material in 1982. Instead of simply extending their songs (sadly, most modern electronic artists give up their heart and soul by letting TOTALLY UNRELATED "artists" remix their singles-check out Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys and Erasure's mixes: Where are the original songs? Where are the original artists? Yuck.) Soft Cell took their material into their OWN hands, and totally reinvented some of their best-known songs (except "Tainted Love"). Instead of the two-minute Soft Cell tracks, we are presented with six lengthy creations, each as exciting as the next. David Ball's keyboards pulse, pump, crunch and bleep to create a carnival-like madhouse of frenzied frolicking, which vocalist Marc Almond luxuriates in. Soft Cell create a world of neon bars and backrooms, with characters that live their lives with hedonistic abandon. Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing throws all cares to the wind, and shamelessly spins the COOLEST dance music *ever* created in the 1980's. Listening to this album now, it is hard to imagine that it was made seventeen years ago. Dave and Marc were very ahead of the pack, and this hypnotic collection of dance mixes brings the listener into an uninhibited land of fantasy and fun. The cover of NON-STOP ECSTATIC DANCING says it all. David Ball-cool, collected, and brimming with GQ style, stands beside Marc Almond, the little diva with more *glamour* than you can shake a whip at, hint at a fantastic world of twilight and sleaze. Marc grins beside an Adult Cinema Emporium in Times Square, while Dave stands by in leather, stoic and staring. I WANT TO PEEK INTO THEIR WORLD! "Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing" is a nice place to start! This edition features some original mixes. A must-have for anyone interested in QUALITY electronic music.

Very very meaty big and bouncy release from Soft Cell - the original EP was released before tainted love and was very well received by college radio. Danceable pop and pretty steamy lyrics; overall a hoot and a lot of fun to listen to and remember when our hair was big, our pants were tight and made outta leather!

This was Soft Cells' second album, is a very fresh and danceable one. It gets us all back to the 80's. It's astounding what a great quality and creativity this two guys were able to cook up just using a couple of synthesizers. Of course Almond is a vocal talent and Ball a great musician. I strongly recommend it to people over 35 yo.

This mini-album was released a full year before the non-stop erotic cabaret recording. These are NOT remixes but original versions of the songs, which were then retooled for the album release. This CD contains a great version of what, and a favorite song of mine, insecure me, which is unavailable elsewhere. But anyway, I just wanted to set the record straight and inform y'all that this is NOT a remix album, but an original issue mini-album...

An "ok" collection of mixes....,

This album is a collection of songs off their first album "Non Stop Erotic Cabaret" which are remixed. The remixes are almost "disco-y" at times but more often they still keep the 'synth-pop' feel which I liked. The album is digitally remastered, which is nice but I find that when synth-pop albums are remastered, they do offer some advantages like the sound is a bit clearer, but most noticeably the songs are louder.I am a huge fan of their first album, and was really looking forward to remixes of an awsome album. I was particularly looking forward to hearing the remix for "Sex Dwarf", my favorite song off their debut. Unfortunatley the remix didn't do that much for me. One thing I did like of the remix was that you could hear the lyrics clearer. It was at this time that Soft Cell's songs were trashy and sleazy, which made the album all the better. The other songs are remixed ok as well. I found many of them were just really really extended at times, and made the (regularly 3 minute songs) boring. Although I am not a fan of these "extended remixes" that so many 80's artist did (f.e. see many of the Depeche Mode singles) so that could be why I didn't like it too much. Although I wasn't fully pleased with the album remixes, I did like some sections of the mixes. For example in the remix of Sex Dwarf, Marc Almond sings the first few verses clearly with not too much background music. I liked that as an intro and thought it was cool to actually hear the lyrics of one of their trashier songs. I was also pleased to hear how they started to "move in" to the bass/rythm of the song with the 'thumping' bassline in the background. It was going quite well, untill they droped the bassline and synths with just the drums again with some distored sound effects and lyrics. The Chips on my Shoulder remix was also mediocre. I liked how it started and the whole remix is done ok, but there is this trumpet sound playing throughout the song. I'm sure many people love this sound which made it sound a bit more like jazz, I didn't like it too much. I found that throughout the album of mixes, I always liked the intro's, or a minute or two in the song, but then got bored or just didn't like the remix at all which was odd since I really enjoy their music. Well its just not my taste for remixes, although the remix of Sex Dwarf would have to be my favorite off the album. Compared to other mixes of 80's synth-pop this would be somewhere in the middle of my list of favourites which is why I gave it a 3/5. |
