5.0 out of 5 stars Yowza! This is a real treat! July 29, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
If you're like me and you've got a good feeling for 90s-era alternative rock, then you'll love this. This sampler has a nice collection of rock tunes all for the can't be beat price of $0.00. Let's break things down.

We start with "Maps" by the Front Bottoms. This indie pop track has a nice, loose sort of feel coupled with a sardonic set of vocals that just seems to 'click' as a listener. It reminds me sort of Fun. and other kinds of pop groups that dabble in sarcastic and cynical tones. "Here Before" by the Feelies is another great song from a fantastic alt-rock group. If you don't know them, then think R.E.M.

Shannon McArdle's "Warden" is a sad slog; the vocals have an alien yet wanting tone to them, almost like a ghost's lament. I suppose you could put this on the same shelf as one of the depressive tunes from Kate Nash or Adele. Pretty talented track for my taste. The dB's, powerpop legends that never have quite gotten the mainstream praise that they have deserved, have "That Time Is Gone". The tune has a good jangle overlay to a grimy country rock base. You can compare it to R.E.M. and Gin Blossoms.

I could go on, but this alone is more than enough to download this sampler. Even if you're not like me and don't jump at the band names here, take a chance on these tunes. This really is a high quality collection. Totally recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Then why the hell did you rate this??? April 20, 2013

I clicked this on because it was free, and I remember that this label existed. I remember the Feelies and the DBs, but this isn't anything I would ever listen to or care about, so, unlike others, I didn't download it. The reason I am posting this is because I see a number of reviews to the effect of 'I never heard of any of this stuff and am not into this type of music, but downloaded it because it's free, and I don't like it and want to get rid of it'. If you just took it because it's free and aren't into this type of music, how are you any more qualified to give it 1 star than I am to listen to an opera record, or go to a sausage tasting, because they're free, then yelp "the record and all the sausages suck" and give them one star, because they aren't my type of thing. I gave it 4 stars, because you have to give it a star rating, and who am I to disparage it because It's not what I happen to prefer.

Free is the word. You can't expect much when it's free. But I'm keeping it for now. Kindle should do free songs that people know.

3.0 out of 5 stars Spotty but some good songs March 31, 2014

Samplers are fun because you can find some great gems sometimes. A few of the songs I wondered what they were thinking, but there are some good ones in this mixture.

1.0 out of 5 stars Kept one song March 8, 2014

I really didn't like this Sampler. I thought the songs were kind of blah and lacked substance. Kept one song out of the whole lot. Don't bother DLing it.

Love the beat and lyrics, especially the first one. Whoever wrote them has a way with words. I get it and makes me laugh, in a good way.

4.0 out of 5 stars taste in my mouth???
Well, the lyrics clearly paint a picture of the vocalists feelings in the lyrics of each song. The first song is a cute little song with a good beat. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Oldies feel
The songs on this album put me in mind of 60s groups. Not driving and wild, not complicated, basic music with basic messages and retro feel.
