1.0 out of 5 stars None of these Diseases: The Bibles Health Secrets for the 21
The original book written in 1963 and 1984 was a wonderful example of explaining how the Bible can be used to help us live healthier.
This book, however, is so full of sermons and posturing, that it is difficult to see where the Bible is being quoted.
We purchased this book and after reading half of it, decided to purchase the original book (through the used...

The classic None of these Diseases has been updated once again. The primary author is over 102 years old and shares from his vast experience both as a medical missionary, college physician, and centurion. Dr. McMillan shares a unique perspective on healthy living and how the Bible gave insight into sources of infectious disease to generations of people starting with Moses until present day. The present edition has been updated by his physician grandson and includes new facts and findings in medical science confirming what the Bible said over 3000 years agao. It takes a fascinating look at how medical science is coming to many of the same conclusions about healthy living that God revealed to his people in biblical times. This book is used in my microbiology class (along with a standard microbiology text and lab manual) for nursing and premed students at a Christian College (in FL). Many students over the past three years have made positive comments about this book (w/previous editions)that provided them with vital information on issues that face the current generation, including AIDS, STDs, stress, infectious disease prevention, and handwashing that they had trouble understanding from their standard textbook. It is written at a level that a layperson can understand, yet has deep insight into disease prevention techniques. I would highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everybody should read this book!, October 25, 2002

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book really could change America! The way we eat, the way we live has serious health consequences, therefore higher doctors bills etc. This book will help you to cut through so much of the rubbish being written about diet and health, and help you to set a lifestyle that is healthy. Forget fad diets this is the way to go, not just for losing weight but fro every aspect of healthy living.

Also goes a long way to proving that God really knew what He was doing all those 1000's of years ago, as science plays catch up with Biblical revelation.

We purchased this book and after reading half of it, decided to purchase the original book (through the used books section of Amazon.com) and now wish we had the option of returning this book and only keeping the original book. The original book is really a great read and extremely helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic book: excellent update, May 17, 2003
By A Customer
I first read Dr. S. I. McMillen's classic None of These Diseases in the early 1970s. He brought a very important balance to the biblical doctrine of divine healing and spiritual health.
Dr. David E. Stern, M.D. is McMillen's grandson. He is trained in internal medicine and is listed in "America's Top Physicians," published by the Consumer Research Council. He added some updated materials in 1984 and 2000 revised editions of None of These Diseases.
The book is reader friendly and is very comprehensive in principles for living in the twenty-first century.
There is very practical help in receiving physical, sexual, emotional, and spiritual wholeness.
The timeless principles God spoke through Moses 2500 years are applicable to the serious covenant believer in the God of the Bible. It's healing for the whole person.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Update of a Classic Bestseller, June 21, 2001
By A Customer
Wow!!! Do you want proof that the Bible is the Word of God? Here it is. I am a doctor, and every word of this new edition had me on the edge of my seat. My college biology professor had us read it to see how science merely uncovers God's truth. It is still true. These doctors use hundreds of Bible and scientific references to show how, when it comes to health, the Bible predated many of the discoveries of modern medicine by thousands of years. I was fascinated to see how even the high and mighty American Academy of Pediatrics has been forced (by the data) to retract their statement of twenty-years ago that circumcision had no medical benefit. Today, the main author of that study recomends circumcision to his patients for it's health benefits. Using scores of riveting stories from their practices in Africa and America, they show that nothing beats the God's plan for your health as recorded in the Bible. I can see why this was one of the few books ever made required reading for every member of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Read this book. It may change your life. But if you are not a Christian, watch out; it may even lead you to faith in Jesus, the Great Physician.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Read, May 18, 2003
There are all kinds of instances where the commands laid down in the books of law correspond with medical practices and scientific principles far more advanced than were possibly known at the time (and maybe there are even more we will find as science advances beyond what we know now). This is a relatively short book that details many of the commands and tells how they prevented the Israelites from falling prey to diseases that were prevelant elsewhere in the ancient world. Also, the book deals with how Godly living today helps prevent a whole host of maladies that our society has as epidemics.

The book is called "None of These Diseases" (by S. I. McMillen, M.D. & David E. Stern, M.D.) Originally written in the early 1960s, it rapidly became a classic. It was revised in 2000 to include new medical findings and also address things that have become common in our modern world, such as HIV and the depression epidemic. It's a very good read.

1.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing rewrite of an original bestseller., December 25, 2000
By A Customer
There was considerable anticipation of the arrival of this "update" of the original 1 million copy bestseller of the same title. It was expected that more illumination would be made on the striking juxta-position of ancient Biblical health insights and their scientific validation by modern medicine. Instead, the book is mainly a preachy tome focused on sex, condoms, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), homosexuality as a curse of immense consequences. Consider author's considerable efforts to show circumcism as a marvelous protector from STDs, while scoffing at the value of condoms to provide STD protection. Again, smoking (rather a well worn subject by now) takes up a considerable amount of the book, even though never being mentioned in the Bible. Under such a broad mantra of Biblically treating the body holy, why not a chapter on the foibles of Twinkies of the value of jogging and health? Moralizing is widely done in Christian books, but is the bulk of this book. Actual medicine in the Bible is virtually ignored. And, for the most part, the simple clinical anecdotes are so pat as to appear contrived. This book is an unfortunate taging on the success of a long term favorite. Too Bad, it could have been much, much better.

3.0 out of 5 stars It needs more Biblical reference and better subjects, March 4, 2001
Not what I had expected. The auther spend too much time discussing smoking, STD's, circumcision (interestingly the comments in this chapter neglect to mention that the AAP now has changed their stance on this to NOT recommend it as a health benefit, though the book does), and homosexuality. I had expected more from the book that these subjects.

However, I was impressed with the historical accounts of disease prevention and shocked by the history leading up to things like modern sewage systems and doctors washing their hands before tending to laboring women. I thought the connection to the Bible with each of these was fairly limited however. It was a good read in these chapters on modern efforts to prevent transmission of germs and the doctors who changed our thinking -- but a poor connection to the Bible. The references to most of the topics are few and far in between.
