THE edition to own,
This review is from: Nonesuch Dickens: 3 Book Set: A Tale of Two Cities, Little Dorrit, Martin Chuzzlewit (Nonesuch Press) (Hardcover)
The Nonesuch Dickens is still considered the be-all-end-all of editions of the author's work. The set was originally published in 1937-38 and limited to 877 sets. This number was chosen because that was the number of steel plates and woodcuts for the illustrations. Included with each set was one of the original plates or woodcuts in a box made to look like one of the volumes.
Rare to begin with and even rarer today, the Nonesuch was out of the reach of most collectors -that is until this facsimile edition. Like the original set, the volumes are in a rainbow of cloth covers. Leather spines are a deluxe touch. The beautiful covers are protected by clear dustjackets. The reproductions of the illustrations are exquisite and finely detailed. I carried one of thicker volumes around with me when I was reading it. It's a trifle large for schlepping but it is a pleasure to read. The sewn binding did not loosen from such treatment. The main difference between this edition and the original is you don't get a plate and this one doesn't cost thousands of dollars! This edition is as beautiful and well-made as the originals but at an affordable price. It's a must for the Dickens fan.

A collector's dream and perfect gift for Dickens' fans,
This review is from: Nonesuch Dickens: 3 Book Set: A Tale of Two Cities, Little Dorrit, Martin Chuzzlewit (Nonesuch Press) (Hardcover)
These gorgeous Nonesuch Dickens editions are facsimile editions of the 1937 Nonesuch Dickens, and are published by The Overlook Press. The books are in quality hardback. These Nonesuch editions have the spine bound in leather and the rest of the covers are cloth-bound in pleasing hues. The dust jackets are clear quality plastic. The paper quality is of good stock and is cream in color. Each book comes with a satin ribbon marker. The text is set in Martin's Type and the illustrations are from the original plates. These are handsome editions and will enhance any collector's library.
