Plato, Bertrand Russel and Alexius Meinong all to some degree or another took fictional and other nonexistent objects seriously as objects worthy of philosophical study. Meinong, for example, regarded such things as the fountain of youth, the golden mountain, and the round square as genuine objects, despite their lack of phenomenal existence. Ken Perszyk brings this line of thought up to date in lucid prose.
