I believe no teacher should be without this helpful resource! Using the idea of "Mentor Texts" to write informational pieces was a foreign concept to me before reading this book. After reading and teaching a few of the lessons found in the book, I will definitely incorporate mentor text writing into my daily curriculum. The authors provide the reader with a great background of why it is important to base our nonfiction writing off of a excellent model, and why should the teacher create the model when there are so many great children's books already written?! This resource lists great children's picture books to teach persuasive writing, introductions an conclusions, writing to build content, writing in the real world, and many, many more topics. The authors take you through their lessons and explain the effectiveness of each step they take in the writing process. What I love most about this book is how you can turn boring writing into authentic engaging writing with just a few key pointers and a great quality children's picture book. And no... children's books are not just for primary students!

I wish I had written this book, because it supports any K-8 teacher of writing. Cappelli and Dorfman provide wonderful examples of books, lessons, and ideas that can easily be used in the classroom. The lessons are linked to the six traits of writing, which are what any strong writing teacher uses as a model.

Even though it is designed for K-8, there is so much that can be applied to upper levels. I present workshops on the teaching of writing tailored to the new CORE CURRICULUM, and this text will be a recommendation for teachers of Language Arts to obtain. Even money is available (and I can get approval) will try to purchase through our i3 grant at least one for each school in which I present. Thanks for the quick service and excellent quality of the text.

It has a lot of fun your turn lessons and suggestions but other than that I thought the reading was just okay. Absolutely love her other books though!
