Excellent practice and good selections,
By Emily Hawkins (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews

Good reading cannot be achieved overnight. Young kids need to read extensively to build their skills. Taking practice tests can enhance your child's level effectively, because results are clearly measured. Without feedback, you don't know where you are or what you need. This book benefited my 4th grader so much that I bought another copy for my 2nd grader's future use. Before 3rd grade, I recommend the online weekly drills provided by Beestar.org. They are common in that reading skills are trained together with nice informative material. Your child gets both in one run.

I enjoyed using this book as a test preparation tool for my students. I did have 2 problems with this book: some of the passages contained only 2 multiple choice questions, & some of the passages contained questions that involved open-ended answers. I do realize the value of open-ended questions but not in the day & age of No Child Left Behind.
Overall, despite these 2 flaws, this book saved me a lot of time when I needed resources to prepare my students for district testing.

Very Helpful,

I use these passages in my class in much the same way you would use the 6 Minute Quick Reads, they match my stories much of the time. The assignments also help with comprehension, a skill that many 2nd and intermediate students seem to lack.
