More flavorful than instant noodle brands found on most supermarket shelves, Nong Shim's Beef Ginger Bowl is an excellent base for a quick lunch. The ginger flavor has a gentle tang that is not so spicy hot that our sons (ages 8 and 6) can't enjoy it (see video). Before you start wagging a finger at me, I acknowledge that instant ramen is no substitute for the real thing. During my seven years in Japan, I ate bowls of hot ramen - shiyo, shio, tonkatsu, miso, and butter corn - among others. On occasion, I ate instant noodles, too. Ramen. Yakisoba. Udon. There was a time and place for everything. If you are looking for a quick, inexpensive, hot lunch that is relatively healthy (vs. a standard, fast-food combination lunch), Nong Shim is a good start. If sodium is a concern, eat the noodles and leave the broth. Add seasonings, vegetables and either eggs or meat to finish it off. J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, executive editor at Serious Eats, recently posted an article, "Ramen Hacks: 30+ Easy Ways to Upgrade Your Instant Noodles." I highly recommend you search out and read the full article because you'll never go back to relying on the flavoring packet alone to make instant noodles. I've distilled his tips down to these four areas: * Simple Add-ins - Miso paste, chili bean sauce, Thai curry paste, Japanese curry powder, fish sauce, harrisa, vinegar and ponzu. * Vegetation - Baby spinach, romaine lettuce, bean sprouts, thinly sliced cabbage, watercress, and scallions "should wilt in a matter of seconds." * Eggs - Hard boiled, soft boiled, the egg-drop method, poached eggs and fried eggs. * Simple Simmered Meat - Thinly sliced meats cook in a matter of seconds directly in the pot. Chicken breast, pork tenderloin, or flank steak are all great candidates. In addition to the Nong Shim Beef and Ginger Bowl I also recommend Nong Shim Big Bowl Noodle Udon and Myojo Ippeichan Yakisoba Japanese Style Instant Noodles. All three are mild enough to satisfy kids and adults. My last recommendation is for Nong Shim Kimchi Noodle Bowl, which is too spicy for young children but excellent for adults who like a hotter soup. We purchased these four brands instant noodles from Amazon earlier this month. I'll post reviews for the others soon. Rating: Five stars.

I have never tried this soup before, I added this soup to get to the free shipping threshold. After I tried one I was glad I included it in my order. I will definitely buy it again. The spices and heat is just right for me. I like my soup spicier than most. It is my way of dieting or not over eating, as hot spicy foods do excellent job of satisfying apatite without over-filling one's belly.

I went with this flavor because others had said it was good...AND IT IS SOOOOO GOOD! It's beefy, it's gingery (there is a bit of warmth, but it's not HOT) and there are several layers of flavor, which makes it unlike most noodle bowls/cups. It isn't grainy at the end of the bowl (like most brands) and the noodles are firm and fresh-tasting. I am going to make sure to keep this flavor and many others from this manufacturer in my pantry. Sure, it has a lot of sodium--all soups have more than you'd think--but if you have this for that quick meal, with some cheese and crackers and fresh grapes, you are eating less sodium and calories than a Value Meal at a fast-food place, and saving cash. In this economy, this product makes total sense--it's delish, it's cheap, and it's shelf-stable.

I ordered these noodles for snacking or making a quick meal. They are good quality, suitable for snacking or a meal - I would add vegetables to make it a more substantial lunch or dinner.

I could only find the more common flavors in my grocery stores, like chicken or shrimp, so when I came across this flavor, I was very interested. It's very tasty. Not microwavable, though.

An Asian friend turned me on to these "Bowls" several years ago. I enjoyed their spicy flavor. I ordered this particular variety recently and found real pieces of lean beef in the soup, amazing! This is a very tasty meal between my 2 jobs. Enjoy!

I got package in with huge dent in side of box, once I open it one bowl damage bad had to take it out of bowl. Since, I can't use it so I put in other glass bowl to eat and it taste very good! Seem mild spicy, gentle nice taste, and saw beefs and other Vegetable show up once it soften up. I worry about recycle bowl being not safe? So I pour in other safe bowl to pour in and over plate top of bowl for 5 mins ready to eat, It's all good! Don't drink bowl soup cuz, sodium sitting there or put in half sodium package and it's will less sodium. Just suggestion for peoples who worry about high sodiums, which goes for my mom can't have too much sodium, she can have it little sprinkle of base sodium as she control it and able to enjoy it still.

I tried these almost by accident. We were promised an icy, unpleasant couple of days and I wanted something that was simple to make yet warming. Just pull the cover on the bowl half open, open the spice pack and fill with boiling water to the mark. After 2 to 3 minutes there is the most wonderful smell. The garlic and beef was the first one I tried. It was just what I wanted. The heat level was pretty high, but I like that. It tasted a bit exotic-- I don't know how authentic the taste is, but I liked it-- and was quite filling.
The only problem I have it is the sodium content. That will prevent it from being a frequent item on my shopping list, however, I do plan to stock up as an occasional treat. Also note that the bowl contains two servings, but no one yet has managed to get me to share. |
