4.0 out of 5 stars Tasteful & swinging quartet set, January 28, 2003
By J. Levinson (Media, PA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Nonpareil (Audio CD)
On this quartet set, Cohn performs two originals and numbers by Johnny Mandel, Billy Strayhorn, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Kurt Weill and Gary McFarland. The then 56-year-old tenor is in fine form throughout, his rich tone seeming to only have deepened and mellowed with age. McFarland's "Blu Hodge" allows him to affect a thick, bluesy tone reminiscent of Johnny Hodges, and the piano and bass also get brief solos. Easily recommended to straight-ahead jazz fans.

Al Cohn - Sax (Tenor)
Lou Levy - Piano
Monty Budwig - Bass
Jake Hanna - Drums
