I used one of these for basic hand dishwashing on our boat, instead of a pop up sponge. It stays soapy for many dishes (I use Bio-Kleen). The slight scratchiness helps a lot - it won't scratch glass or plastic or shiny stainless but it can get off hard water spots like on a teakettle and stuff stuck on cookie sheets. The sponge inside is so lightweight it dries out fast. Ditto for the cover, so it didn't ever get smelly. Also, others couldn't ruin it (like knit hemp dishcloths that knives can cut.) Weirdly, it seems like the "silver" keeps it somehow antibacterial. I still needed an eco-cloth type sponge for wiping counters though.
