Super Stickman Golf
It's all about physics
Super Stickman Golf
The right ball can make all the difference

Super Stickman Golf isn't golf the way you know it; it's actually a physics puzzler nicely blended with the challenges and themes of traditional golf. Super Stickman Golf offers something golfers have only dreamt about while trying to par the course: special abilities. You're not just a golfer anymore. You're a Super Stickman Golfer with cool super powers.

Golf of the Future

Since 18 holes are never enough, you can swing your way through more than 300 extraordinary holes. Use your special abilities to try to get that birdie and manipulate the ball like you've never done before--even with a perfect swing.

Choose your ball carefully. Since this isn't just ordinary golf, you can't use ordinary balls. You can choose from sticky balls, ice balls, air brakes, and nitro balls. If you've ever wanted to stop your ball in mid-air, freeze water, or stick your shot to something, now you've got the balls to do it.

If an app has the words "Ad-Free" in its title, I expect it to be...well...free of ad networks! The developer of this app doesn't see it that way, and has included not one but TWO ad networks in this app. Namely, Charboost and Tapjoy networks.
Oh...and Flurry analytics.
AND In-app purchasing...in a paid app!
Then every once in a while you get a popup that has some information about the game, or something to buy, or to like them on FaceBook and get your 50 free Golf "bux." Maybe it's just me...but when I'm playing a game and something pops up and forces me to stop playing and deal with the popup, it takes me right out of any fun I was having. I don't remember the fun I was having before nearly as much as I remember, "grumble grumble grumble stupid popup grumble click the X grumble..." :-)

The physics is a bit dubious (and I'm a physicist, so I noticed this right away). Specifically, the range (horizontal distance travelled by the ball) doesn't change enough with the change in launch angle. As you change the angle from 45 degrees, each step makes a small change in the range until you get to vertical and then there's a HUGE change.

There is a practice tee...but no tutorial (at least none that I could find). I went to the practice tee and just started pushing buttons to figure out what did what.

Overall, because of the ad networks, analytics, and IAPs...this is not an app you should have on your phone or tablet. The questionable physics and lack of tutorial just adds to that recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars simple, intuitive, addicting February 18, 2012
Verified Purchase
Picked this up after seeing it listed in IGN's top 10 android games of all time (number 4). Was suprised to see just two reviews for it prior to mine on Amazon here, but figured maybe it just made the app store. I have it installed on the Kindle Fire. Visually it looks good. There are a lot of achievements and a good course selection. The power up balls make it very interesting. As far as the basic gameplay, it is simple to pick up. I was playing it with-in minutes and although they provide practice holes, it was easy to go straight to the course. It is one of those simple physics games where your aim and control of the powermeter is important. The ball will then fly in the air as directed and will further interact with your enviroment once it lands. The first course starts simply and you can easily get a hole in one once you figure out the mechanics. The difficulty slowly ramps up from there, sucking you into the game play. Courses will temp you to take extreme short cuts (high risks)or play it safe. The powerballs really make a difference and since you are only allowed a set number per course, overall strategy comes into play. Lots of choices and for its low price is an outstanding and addictive game.

2.0 out of 5 stars The "Golf Bux" IAP Makes Me Frown March 25, 2015
Verified Purchase
It is pretty self evident what the deal is with this PREMIUM version versus the normally FREE version - they slapped a hefty $2.99 price tag on it, removed the ad displays, but left the code... and the IAP that asks you to buy Golf Bux to remove the already removed third-party ads. Even then, you STILL get a More Games style of self-advertising when opening the game while online. There goes the traditional "Ad-free" concept, right into a water hazard.

So then what would be the point of spending $2.99? Comparing the two versions, this premium looks like it offers 5 new courses, which instead of being just offered as part of the upgrade, unlocked and ready to go, is instead unlockable by, yup, IAP-driven Golf Buxs. Now to be fair, I did earn 40 Golf Bux just off my very first campaign 9 holes, and I do tend to be a tad more lenient on IAP than others, yet I find this IAP rather ridiculous.

When a freebie is made into a Premium version, adding another IAP purchase reason as if it was an incentive to buy the premium just strikes my inner-gamer as wrong. And believe me, I have spent oodles of cash over the past 15 years on fluffy IAP in MMORPGs. This, though, just makes me frown. Sure, you can earn Golf Bux buy earning achievements, but what happens when you are out of achievements? Time to delete the game since you can't get more for extra shots without paying cash?

I actually think this is a pretty fun game in itself - but I am not keeping it. I simply find the IAP distasteful and sloppy in this one.

As mentioned, there are two Advertising modules (Chartboost and Tapjoy) as well as Flurry Analytics. Game installed at 33MB with an option to move off Device Memory. Does run OFFLINE, and it does exit cleanly with the back-key.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good golf game. (Confusion added at no cost.) June 17, 2012

I read other reviews stating that this game is free on the Google Play Store, so I decided to check it out. I thought this was going to be one of those "free ads version vs. pay ad-free version" things that confuse so many people. However, this is not the case. The version on Google Play Store is free and without the ads, except for one "try one of our other games" splash screen that pops-up at startup--if that's what makes it free, then wow--that's one expensive splash screen.

Another difference I noticed with the Google Play Store 2.0 version of this game is that it has OpenFeint. I only bring this up as information of possible things to come--I'm not saying that the later version (2.0) of this app will have OpenFeint when it gets here to the Amazon Appstore updating this 1.8 version. One thing though--if Openfeint is in the future for this app at least it's disabled by default. You have the choice and have to hit the OpenFeint icon to activate it. But again, since this appears to be in a later version (not yet at Amazon) there is no need to deal with this issue at this time.

There are three course levels (Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced)--I tried a little of each and found them all pretty fun. They all have different themes and you unlock the next new course (and theme) as you complete the previous course.

As in all golf games, there are hazards that add strokes to your score, but there are also anti-hazards scattered around that remove strokes as well (of course, these are harder to get)--it's an interesting twist.

There are "powerups" (7 special types of balls) you can use to help make a tough course easier. You can play up to 7 powerups per round.
