I rented this movie (with a free movie rental coupon) and even having paid nothing I was disappointed. I really love Jennifer (Nora) and think she is a highly underrated actress. It's unfortunate that she has to take roles like this that underutilize her talent.

THe storyline is predictable and the characters underdeveloped. The storyline depends upon too many stereotypical depictions of characters - the "good" girl, the "bad" girl, the thug, the homosexual male.

I'm a big supporter of Af Am books and films, but I wouldn't recommend spending your hardearned money on this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could have been great, what a waste, December 24, 2004

What a waste of great talent. All this film needed was a bigger budget. The screenplay was mediocre at best. It was obviously shot on 16mm film. Looks like it was trying to be a Barbershop clone. There were some funny moments thats why I gave it 2 stars.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the female version of Barbershop!!!, August 4, 2004
By
This review is from: Nora's Hair Salon (DVD)
After Barbershop you knew a hair salon movie would follow. Nora is a beauty shop owner. She is the mamma to everyone who works, or does not work in her shop. She is also keeping a secret, and also suffering from heartbreak. Nora also has a hair care line that she is hoping to sell, but finds the formula is too strong. You have Ming the manicurist who is a smart talker "where you get your feet from Prison?" You have sexually confused Devon, and his flamboyant "boyfriend" Delicious. Chole (Tamala Jones)is the hair stylist who thinks she knows everything and does what she wants.

You have the Latina stylist by day and the stripper by night. Then you have Lily. Lily is a new stylist hoping she will belong to the "family", and dealing with a guy who is abusive to her. Lily is young, and she is naive. She has skills when it comes to doing hair, and great ideas that could help Nora. Bobby Brown also has a part in the film as Benny, he is the abusive guy who won't leave Lily alone.

This movie had moments that will make you chuckle. The movie pretty much showed the whole dynamic about the beauty shop being a place where women congregate, talk, and share the gossip. My favorite scene in the movie is when this woman has a relaxer on her head and it starts to burn and burn bad. She does what every woman has wanted to do in a shop. Totally freak out!!! Now that was the one scene that made ma laugh. Another scene that I found funny was when some guy was sent to get Lily and Nora punched him out, and then everyone in the salon made him look like a woman while he was out cold.

This movie is NOT the female Barbershop. It's no where in the same league. Lil Kim has a small part that is forgettable. (...) This movie was made with a small budget and it shows!! This movie rushed to beat Beauty Shop to the punch and in my opinion it failed miserably. Watching the making of the film was interesting. The movie is just okay, so do not get this with high expectations. You will be disappointed if you do.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, June 21, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Nora's Hair Salon (DVD)
I was very disappointed in this movie. I too am a Jennifer Lewis fan and she attracted me to renting the movie. Yet, the only characters I enjoyed were Lewis (Nora), Jones, and Ali. Lil' Kim, Bobby Brown, and Whitney Houston should not have been in the movie. The director, in his interview said that they were looking for a hip hop element to be included in this "Urban" film. Wrong Idea. If you look at Barbershop, although Ice-Cube and Eve were the so-called "Hip Hop" element you forgot that they were rappers, in how good they performed. I don't really see Ice-Cube as a rapper, but a actor now. Nora's Hair Salon, needed to be innovative and try something new. It gets tiring to see the same old "Black" movie do the same thing, which is nothing. I want someone to make a movie that is going to appeal to other aspects of life than me going to the Beauty Salon. Yes I seen Barbershop 1 and 2, and enjoyed it. (Barbershop 1 was Better) and yes there is a Beautyshop movie with Queen Latifah coming soon, and I pray that this one fairs better than Nora's Hair Salon. I just hope that they stop making silly movies with Black stars, just to make a movie. Nora's Hair Salon had quality Actresses and Actors, I just hope that they can get quality scripts to make quality movies, not this junk that has been given to us. How do producers and diretors expect to be supported when they give audiences the same old junk? Then they cry that no African Americans are being nominated for awards. "Make quality movies with fresh new story-lines" No wonder most of our "Black" movies are on video in a month after release or go to video without being in one theater.

Ms. Tamala Jones is always good and right on point... I brought this from (...) and have watched it over and over and over..
Good Buy

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest.., June 2, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Nora's Hair Salon (DVD)
I was actually excited to get this movie. I had ambitions that it was going to be a hysterical laugh from beginning to end. I was wrong. There are it's funny parts, it's sterotypical parts, and it's parts that get your heart to warm up. Although it has a good meaning and theme goin on, I got tired of it quickly. It's like a low budget film and something that should have been on Lifetime. All of the actors played their role well, (although I thought that Delicious was being overly dramatic and portraying homosexuals in an ill manner). Overall, I can't say I liked it nor disliked it. It was OK. I just learned not to have many high expectations of a movie based on it's lead actor.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cancel your appointment at this salon, March 28, 2005
This review is from: Nora's Hair Salon (DVD)
I caught Nora's Hair Salon on Christmas Eve last year on UPN. I started watching the movie at 8:00; it was so terrible I wound up turning off around 8:20. If they tried really hard they could have made a bad movie.
There is a total lack of effort onscreen. No one tried to make this movie work. Not the writers, because the script is about absolutely nothing. All I know is Nora owns a hair salon and people work there. I wanted to who Nora was, and why this hair salon is so important to the community. Why do people want to come here? Why do I want to know about this place? But the screenplay doesn't answer these questions. Instead it takes stock characters and a stock situation used in a dozen other hair comedies and warms them over. Since the writer took no time to tell a story, I wasn't interested in watching the rest of the movie.
The actors don't try to act either. Most are just standing there saying their lines looking bored. I think I saw someone actually look at their watch a couple of times! Cameos by Lil Kim, Bobby Brown and others are a total waste; as they do absolutely nothing except look out of place onscreen. I guess the only thing of interest to them was the paycheck.
Please don't spend your hard earned cash on this DVD It's a total waste of your time If the writers directors, actors and producers of this movie aren't willing to try onscreen why you make an effort to spend 90 minutes of your valuable time watching them do nothing. If you're looking for a good DVD buy Never 2 Big or Diary of a Mad Black Woman instead. At least the actors in those movies try to make an entertaining movie.

A big disappointment. The bulk of the movie consists of segueways (not sure if this is the correct name for it) between "scenes" of driving around town. This only stretches a movie that needs to be put out of its misery. It would be funny if it weren't so bad. The budget REALLY showed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nora's Hair Salon, January 6, 2010
This review is from: Nora's Hair Salon (DVD)
Jennifer Lewis plays Nora, a young woman who runs a hair salon full of sassy, eclectic stylists. The cast is so funny, and I love the characters that were portrayed. My favorite was Ming, the manicurist who wasn't afraid to speak her mind. I highly recommend this movie to everyone who wants good clean comedic entertainment, along with a very good story about the human spirit, of the common people.
