About the Author

James Sutherland was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England, many, many, many years ago. So long ago, in fact, that he can't remember a thing about it. The son of a musician, he moved around lots as a youngster, attending schools in the Isle of Man and Spain before returning to Stoke where he lurked until the age of 18. After gaining a French degree at Bangor University, North Wales, James toiled manfully at a variety of office jobs before making a daring escape through a fire exit, hell-bent on writing silly nonsense full-time. James was a big fan of Richmal Crompton's "Just William" books as a kid and has been spotted giggling at P.G. Woodhouse and George MacDonald Fraser's "Flashman" books (to name a couple of favourites) in adulthood. In his spare time, James enjoys hunting for slugs in the garden, chatting with his gold fish and frolicking around the house in his tartan nightie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious! Typical great British humor :) January 14, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
We have really enjoyed this story as a family today. I read it aloud in two sittings. Thanks so much for the laughs! Norbert is an old horse who looks in his trough one morning and is immediately scared by the reflection he sees thinking that it is another horse looking at him. He doesn't have the best of memories but does recall his friend Colin, the cuckoo, telling him that it is indeed only his reflection. Norbert tries to be brave and so 'grins' into the water. Imagine his shock when he discovers his teeth are green!
He runs back to Colin in a panic demanding that Colin do something to help him clean his teeth so that Delilah, the young filly, in the next field will take more notice of him.

Colin reminds Norbert that to clean ones teeth, a toothbrush and tube of toothpaste are necessary. The antics that ensue as Colin goes to the farm house to retrieve the required "goods" from Farmer Finbar's bathroom are truly hilarious. The author describes the scene so well that your imagination can just "see" all that is happening. I am not going to spoil it for you by telling you! Suffice to say that Norbert gets his teeth cleaned but it does not net the results that he wanted.

This is a chapter book - 6 chapters in all with an epilogue so although our four year listened not sure how much he actually understood. Therefore I would recommend it for older children.

Any cons? That depends on your personal standards but here are a few points that I think might put some parents off and that is why I personally, see this book as a family read aloud, rather than allowing children to read this independently.

The phrase "Good Lord" is used in Chapter 4 when Farmer Finbar is talking to himself.

5.0 out of 5 stars ~~Forgetful Norbert and Colin, the Cuckoo~~ March 13, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Norbert is getting along in years and his memory is not what it used to be. He is now 27 and relies on Colin, the Cuckoo, for many things. Norbert asks Colin for a favor and promises that he will leave him alone if he just does this one thing for him!

The scene in Finbar's bathroom is hilarious and made me chuckle. I also thought that Delilah, the frisky filly played a feisty part.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun for bedtime February 18, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read a chapter per night to my 6year old, and she loved the story.
It was a nice step up to a more complicated chapter story without pictures...worked out good since I read it to her after the lights were out. It also had some big words that I had to explain to her, which I liked.
She loved it so much we had to buy the other Norbert books...but I guess that was the idea :)

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun story about a stupid horse January 27, 2015
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a fun story that kids will laugh at and enjoy. It is about a fat old horse who is not at all smart. He is even very forgetful. He frequently bothers the cuckoo named Colin for advice and for help, which annoys Colin very much. Norbert is even frightened when he looks in water and sees his reflection. He thinks there is another horse in the water. When Colin explains that it is only a reflection, he soon forgets this.
Norbert is fascinated and in love with a female horse who is beautiful and much younger than him. She has very white teeth, while Norbert's teeth are green from the many years he has eaten grass. He wants white teeth so that he can impress the female horse. Colin explains that the only way to whiten his teeth is to brush them, but he has no tooth brush and paste and can't get out of the field to get them. He persuades Colin to fly to the farmer's house to steal them for him. Colin agrees and finds himself and Norbert in an adventure.
