Norbert (ca. 1080-1134) met staunch resistance in his attempt to reform the clergy in his native Xanten, and founded a religious community in France. His establishment became the beginning of a successful order, the Canons Regular of Premontre, also known as the Premonstratensians or Norbertines. Though Norbert himself left no writings, his followers created a wealth of texts in their efforts to reform the clergy. Norbert and Early Norbertine Spirituality gathers a cross-section of these writings, as part of "The Classics of Western Spirituality" series published by Paulist Press. Included are the "Apologetic Letter" of Anselm of Havelberg, excerpts from "Miracles of St. Mary of Laon" by Herman of Tournai, "Life of Godfrey of Cappenberg", "On the Knowledge of Clerics" by Philip of Harvengt, and more.
