Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9. A novel set in both Manhattan and in outer space. Who has been defacing government spaceships orbiting near Mars with graffiti? This starts out being the question but soon turns into much more. After Norby, the bungling robot, is kidnapped and Fargo gives chase, Jefferson Wells, Fargo's brother and Norby's owner, follows in Lizzie, the talking, reasoning Manhattan taxicab. Soon Jeff and his companions stumble onto a plot in which Garc the Great is attempting to take over the Solarweb (successor of the World Wide Web) so that he can gain control of the Federation's computer system and, therefore, the Federation itself. He plans to accomplish this by using an alien Connector Ring with powers no one seems to understand except for an alien creature called the Exile. What follows is a series of journeys though hyperspace and through time in order to capture Garc and repair the consequences that changing the past have on the future. This 11th book about Norby is a stand-alone read. Readers will be kept interested by the easy-to-understand explanations of the paradoxes involved in time travel and by the increasing intensity of the plot as the story progresses. Fast-paced adventure.?Michele Snyder, Chappaqua Public Library, NY

From Booklist

Gr. 3^-5. Norby the Robot and Jeff are back again in another adventure. This time, they have to stop the nasty Garc the Great from altering history and thereby creating unpleasant consequences. Using time travel and ingenuity, they complete their mission. The story is slow to start, but once it picks up, readers will really want to know what's going to happen next and how all the time-travel paradoxes will be resolved. Asimov's use of language fluctuates: though her subject matter has appeal for a younger audience, she occasionally uses words that may be difficult for an average third-grader. However, since kids interested in science fiction will frequently read above their level, this shouldn't be a problem. The series' fans will jump right in, though new readers might want to start at the beginning of the series in order to become familiar with the cast of characters. Elizabeth Drennan

This review is from: Norby and the Terrified Taxi (Norby Series) (Hardcover)
This latest installment of the Norby saga is an excellent read for young and old readers alike. I was hoping that Lizzie the taxi would be in another novel after I read "Norby Down to Earth" and Janet Asimov did not disappoint me. Although the story really isn't focused on Lizzie, the character really serves the other characters in a way that makes you feel like she goes above and beyond the three laws of robotics. I recommend the and all of the other Norby books.
