This is a side-by-side comparison of six liquid omega-3 supplements: Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid), Omapure Liquid Omega-3 Fish Oil, Carlson Labs Very Finest Liquid Fish Oil, Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega Liquid, Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Liquid (Non-concentrated), and Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega Xtra Liquid (Concentrated).

There are three major components of omega-3 in these products: EPA (which is good for your heart, circulatory system, lowering triglycerides, depression and mood orientation, and is a powerful anti-inflammatory for soothing joint pains), DHA (which is good for your mental acuity, or if you are pregnant, nursing an infant, or for children), and "other." Other omega-3s, like DPA and SDA, are types of fatty acids which are easily converted to EPA in the body. In most fish oils, the amount of these other fatty acids is low, but in highly concentrated oils, it can be a significant amount. The important components are EPA and DHA.

SOURCE OF FISH OIL AND UDO'S OIL: Unlike fish oil, which comes primarily from fish such as anchovies, sardines, mackerel, cod, pollock and whiting, Udo's oil comes from fresh flax, sesame and sunflower seeds, as well as oils from evening primrose, rice germ and oat germ.

BREAKDOWN: Here is a breakdown of these supplements.

Udo's Oil 3*6*9 Blend (Liquid) (See, Flora Udo's Choice Oil, 3-6-9 Blend, 32 Ounce)

The Nordic Naturals Omega-3 (non-ultimate version) has a pale yellow color. Taste is a combination of slight lemon and very slight fish. The fish taste is minimal and almost imperceptible. The Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega is clear (no color) and has a very faint lemon taste with no fish taste at all. On a per ounce basis and per nutrient basis, the non-Ultimate version is significantly cheaper than the Ultimate version. IMHO, saving money on the cheaper non-Ultimate Omega-3 liquid is worth it. You can always drink two doses of Omega-3 to equal one dose of Ultimate Omega-3 and still save money.

Just remember the oil can last up to 3 months if refrigerated. If you can't drink it all within the 3 months, then buy a smaller quantity.

I've used this Nordic Natural product for about 1 1/2 yrs. I can't swallow most Fish Oil caps and frankly, I'm really dubious about the origin of the fish oil as well as production methodology of many popular brands (most in capsule form). This product is very pleasant tasting. NO fishy odor nor fishy taste. It has a pleasant lemon scent and the oil is about the consistency of virgin olive oil. It's very concentrated so you only need 5cc - 10cc per day. The next best lemony flavored fish oil is Carlson's but the second bottle I tried wasn't as pleasant tasting as the first so I switched to this brand. (both un-opened Carlson bottles had the same expiration date about 3 yrs hence). I have purchased both via Amazon and the local vitamin store (they sometimes match the best price). As a health professional (Internist, retired) I have counseled many patients to supplement the diet with a good quality fish oil for its many benefits to one's health. I also have recommended Mag Citrate Complex as our diets frequently do not contain enough Magnesium due to leaching from the soil. Magnesium oxide doesn't absorb readily. Leg cramps greatly benefit from this supplement. You can get both here on Amazon. Add 81mg Brand name aspirin and 1000 units of Vit D3 along with Calcium from various sources and that is all a healthy body needs for maintenance. There is NO credible scientific evidence that any of the myriad of other supplements are of any value except to the manufacturer or distributor (-s). BTW, this lemony flavored fish oil makes a terrific garnish on chicken, fish, salads. A bit of garlic spray and a tsp of this oil makes for a tasty dressing.Read more ›

I bought this brand after using a bottle of Carlson The Very Finest Fish Oil Liquid Omega-3 Lemon, 500ml because it appears to be better quality. You pay a little more for a little less oil but the concentration of omega-3 is higher and the needed dosage is less. The only thing I don't like about the Nordic Naturals brand is the bottle it come in. It has a small, hard plastic cap that cracked and couldn't be used. I have to use a wine bottle stopper in its place. The Carlson bottle has a plastic no-drip spout that worked really well. The Nordic bottle drips on itself when you pour it and makes an oily coating on the outside of the bottle. I may switch back to Carlson since it's easier to use. There doesn't seem to be that much difference between the two.
