You don't need salt, ice, or electricity to make ice cream, sherbet, frozen yogurt, or other icy treats with this machine. Just pop the unit into a freezer overnight, insert the plastic paddle, pour a favorite recipe into the chilling chamber, snap on the lid, and turn the crank. Nonstick for easy cleanup, the chilling chamber holds 1-1/2 pints and produces ice cream in about 25 minutes. The unit has a temperature indicator that turns green when the chilling chamber is frozen to "ideal," but the impatient can begin eating when the indicator reads "OK." The crank fits into either of two gears: one to scrape the chilling chamber's sides; the other to beat in air for volume and lightness. Using first gear produces a dense, creamy confection like Italian gelato. An accompanying booklet offers recipes for all the standards plus low-calorie treats, frozen pies, slushes, malts, and cocktails. --Fred Brack

Just because this is cheaper than the others doesn't mean it will make inferior ice cream. It's cheap because you wind the handle yourself. It doesn't take too long, and you just have to do a few turns every few minutes - you don't have to twirl the handle non-stop for 30 minutes! What comes out is the same smooth ice cream that the other machines make. And you'll save some money. And it's easier to store because there's no wire trailing. (Great for kids too.)

i have had my ice cream maker for so long i cant even remember when or where i got it. but i have got to tell ya, I love this thing.. the only problem is i lost the instruction manual and cant find the ice cream recipe that was in it.. its easy to use and i have given it to my daughter's daughter. shes 5 and now i need the recipe for the mix... HELP someone.. please send it to me at my email address .. i would be so appriciative...

With our freezer, the chamber gets so cold that a half pint of ice cream takes less than a minute to freeze. Larger portions take longer.

The unit is fairly sturdy. The lid isn't as tight as I'd like but it is fine.
